    Job Description

    Purpose of Position:

    Under direction, with very broad latitude for independent judgment and decision making, supervises, trains, assigns work to, and evaluates work performance of personnel in a small laboratory or laboratory sub-unit performing routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and analyses. In addition to performing the typical tasks of lower Assignment Levels at a higher level, also performs the following:

    Examples of Typical Tasks:
    1. Maintains a program of quality control and participates in a program of quality assurance.
    2. Advises staff on appropriate methods and techniques.
    3. Oversees the ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment as well as the preparation, packaging, labeling, and standardization of laboratory media and reagents; and records results and pertinent data of prepared products or oversees this function.
    4. Prepares labels, packages, and standardizes laboratory media, reagents, controls and specimens for use in analyses.
    5. Prepares work orders for laboratory repairs.
    6. Assists in developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures.
    7. Conducts tests and/or other complex analyses.
    8. Designs and maintains charts, logs, and other records.
    9. Testifies in court or other proceedings as an expert witness.
    10. May prepare correspondence and narrative/statistical reports.
    11. May participate in or supervise the preparation, administration, and rating of laboratory proficiency test programs.

    Minimum Qualifications

    For Appointment to Level III

    Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED.

    One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist performing pertinent tests and analyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 571 of the New York State Public Health Law.
