- Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments, escort them into an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs, and record in the electronic medical record. Collect thorough patient histories and document visits in EMRs. Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision from the veterinarian and credentialed Veterinary Technicians.
- Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at the direction of the veterinarian and help maintain the EMR.
- Monitor and answer telephone lines, route calls, schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results to doctors and clients, and maintain client/patient records.
- Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures and assist doctors and/or veterinary technicians in anesthetizing patients. Maintain patients safely under anesthesia, monitor vital parameters, assist with recovery, and prepare for discharge or transfer to overnight care facilities.
- Under supervision, perform in-hospital treatments including injectable/oral medications and intravenous fluid therapy; keep patients clean, hydrated, and fed; exercise dogs as needed for elimination.
- Train new staff and disseminate knowledge as required.
- Keep the hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning based on need and maintenance schedules.
- Assist with inventory, scheduling, and other tasks as needed; monitor and route practice phone calls and manage wait times during busy periods or emergencies.
- Uphold and enforce all Petco and Vetco Total Care policies; oversee hospital operations and supervise paraprofessional staff; participate in training as required.
- Preferred at least 1 year of experience in a veterinary practice or equivalent experience demonstrating the listed skills.
- Leadership capabilities required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Compassionate and professional demeanor under emotional or stressful situations.
- Telephone and computer skills; willingness to learn and adapt.

Position Purpose
The Hospital Leader On Duty provides excellent veterinary care to our full-service hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Hospital Leader On Duty represents the mission and values of Petco to all pets and pet parents. Our Hospital Leader On Duty sets the tone with the technical and customer support partners in the hospital, and is responsible, like all partners, for fostering cohesion and motivation within the team.
Essential Job Functions
Nature of Supervision
In all activities related to care and handling of patients and clients, the incumbent will take direct supervision from the Area Operations Manager.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has immediate daily supervisory duties over paraprofessional partners.
Education/Experience
Work Environment
Most duties are in the veterinary hospital. The role requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods. A large portion of time is spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.
Contacts
This position will regularly communicate with clients, service teams and management in Vetco Total Care Hospitals and Pet Care Centers.
