    Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced paralegal to join our team specializing in homeless advocacy and expungement services, as well as general case management services for the unhoused. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in case management, coupled with experience in facilitating expungement proceedings. This role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of homeless individuals by addressing legal barriers to housing and employment, as well as other barriers impeding a better quality of life and/or permanent housing.

Case Management: Manage a caseload of homeless clients, providing support and guidance throughout their legal proceedings. This includes conducting intake interviews, assessing needs, and developing individualized action plans.

Expungement Assistance: Assist eligible clients with the process of expunging or sealing criminal records, helping to remove barriers to housing, employment, and other opportunities. Provide guidance on eligibility requirements, documentation, and court procedures.

Legal Research: Conduct legal research on relevant statutes, regulations, and case law pertaining to homelessness, housing rights, expungement laws, and related issues. Stay updated on changes in relevant laws and policies.

Documentation and Filing: Prepare, review, and file legal documents such as petitions for expungement, complaints, motions, and affidavits. Ensure all documentation is accurate, organized, and submitted in a timely manner.

Client Advocacy: Serve as an advocate for homeless clients, both within the legal system and in interactions with social service agencies, landlords, and other relevant parties. Communicate effectively on behalf of clients to ensure their rights are upheld.

Collaboration: Collaborate with attorneys, social workers, and other members of the legal team to develop comprehensive strategies for client representation. Participate in case meetings, trainings, and other team activities.

Outreach and Education: Conduct outreach to homeless individuals to inform them of their legal rights, including expungement opportunities, and available resources. Develop and deliver educational workshops and presentations on relevant legal topics.

Data Management: Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions, case progress, expungement proceedings, and outcomes. Compile data for reporting purposes and assist in program evaluation efforts.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in paralegal studies, social work, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in case management, preferably working with homeless populations.
    • Experience facilitating expungement proceedings and familiarity with relevant laws and procedures.
    • Strong understanding of housing law, eviction proceedings, public benefits, and civil rights.
    • Proficiency in conducting legal research and drafting legal documents.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact compassionately with clients from diverse backgrounds.
    • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize workload effectively.
    • Empathy, patience, and a commitment to social justice and advocacy for marginalized communities.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Paralegal certification or equivalent training.
    • Experience working in a legal aid clinic, nonprofit organization, or similar setting focused on homelessness, poverty law, and expungement services.
    • Fluency in languages commonly spoken by homeless populations in the local area.
    • Knowledge of community resources and social service networks available to homeless individuals.

    Compensation and Benefits

    • This is a 40-hour, full-time exempt position, with some benefits.
    • Pay rate: $25.00-$30.00/hour depending on experience
