    JOB SUMMARY

    The Boring Crew Chief will provide direction, coordination,and leadership to a group of personnel assigned to a crew for construction,improvements, and changes to the overhead, underground, and telecommunicationsfacilities at EPB. As a working member, operate boring machines and excavationequipment as needed in constructing and maintaining transmission anddistribution lines.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Lead excavation and boring crews in safe workpractices as outlined in the EPB Safety Rules Manual
    • Order and maintain one-calls in compliance withexcavation laws and regulations for all work
    • Responsible for ordering plates, flowable fill,concrete, and rock as needed with authorization from the supervisor
    • Knowledgeable in standards, interpreting prints,and promptly meeting customer needs
    • Perform daily work and data entry into EPB'sComputer-aided-dispatch system
    • Plan work for maximum efficiency of expendituresof assigned personnel. Meet productivity requirements as set forth by theDivision Vice-President, Assistant Vice President, and/or Department Manager,understanding that crew performance and actions are the responsibility of theBoring Crew Chief
    • EPB-focused and customer service-oriented indaily work and actions
    • Operate boring machines and excavation equipmentto construct and maintain transmission, distribution, and electric and fiberlines
    • Maintain maintenance records and logs forequipment under their supervision
    • Determine proper mix ratios for boring mud indifferent geological conditions
    • Calculate angles and distances for boring pathsto avoid critical infrastructure while completing jobs
    • Operate and maintain vehicles and equipmentsafely at all times; Operate horizontal directional drill rig (HDD); Operateexcavation equipment (backhoe, trencher, hydro-vac, etc.)
    • Promote cooperation and good workingrelationships with other departments of EPB as well as EPB contractors - lineand tree
    • Know and adhere to the appropriate writtensafety rules and procedures. Keep tools, equipment, and supplies in properworking order and maintain a clean, safe work area. Attend safety meetings andactively participate in safety awareness programs and activities
    • Provide input to departmental leadershipregarding employee performance and emerging issues that may require correctiveaction
    • Work during system emergencies and scheduledactivities to prevent schedule delays or customer inconveniences a minimum of70% of the time
    • Assist in service restoration efforts asrequired
    • Operate new equipment once trained
    • Perform miscellaneous work as assigned
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    • 5 years of related experience as a horizontaldirectional drill rig and excavation operator
    • Various related equipment operating experiencerequired, such as trencher, boring machine, mini excavator, etc
    • Knowledgeable in standards, interpreting prints,and ability to meet customer needs promptly
    • Ability to read and interpret detailed one-lineURD prints, switch complex URD 3-phase and single-phase circuits, know URDmethodology, and have a good working knowledge of URD installations andpractices throughout the EPB system
    QUALIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Meets Expectations" or higher overallrating on the last annual performance appraisal; no disciplinary actions(verbal or written) during the previous appraisal period
    • Must have worked 70% or higher of overtimeoffered on the most recent performance appraisal
    • Ability to write legibly and speak plainly tocommunicate job results effectively; ability to read and comprehend written andverbal job instructions/information
    • Possess and maintain a valid "Class A"Commercial Driver's License with a DOT health card and the authorization todrive Class I, II, III, IV, and V vehicles with tank endorsement
    • Ability to obtain the appropriate registrationwith the Department of Commerce and Insurance, Division of Fire Prevention,State of Tennessee, for using explosives within six (6) months of employment
    • Ability to attain and maintain HAZWOPERcertification
    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    • While performing the duties of this job, theemployee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanicalparts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; risk of electricalshock; risk of radiation; and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed toextreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes orairborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and explosives. The noise levelin the work environment is usually moderate
    • Required to lift and manipulate weights up to75-100 pounds

    EPB provides electric and communications services, which areconsidered critical infrastructure by the Department of Homeland Security. ThisEPB job is essential to support this critical infrastructure and may berequired to work onsite or in the field to maintain these services.
