    Description

    GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES


    Functions as a member of the team to meet the communication needs of the patient, family, departmental staff, ancillary staff and physicians.

    Prepares and compiles records in the facility. Initiates directions from physician and nursing staff. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies, procedures and standards.

    DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO

    • Displays respect for patient's integrity, patient information and patient rights
    • Transcribing providers orders using computerized order entry system
    • Entering patient charges into computerized system
    • Updating patient information as new orders are received
    • Contacting other departments for scheduling/referrals
    • Notifying RN/LPN of new orders and coordinates equipment
    • Taking/sending specimens to lab in a timely manner
    • Assembling charts per universal chart order
    • Posting test results on patient charts
    • Imprinting, dates, adding chart forms, photocopying charts and checking charts for signatures
    • Dismantling discharge charts and routes to HIM
    • Ordering, maintaining and verifying weekly stock/non-stock items according to unit needs
    • Assisting with annual inventory of equipment and supplies
    • Assists with maintaining the cleanliness of the unit
    • Maintains high level of interpersonal relationships with program staff
    • Utilizes appropriate skills in telephone etiquette when answering the telephone, making sure to record correct messages and pass along to appropriate staff, including patient inquiries.
    • Demonstrate efficiency in maintaining support services, which are vital to effective program operation.
    • Maintains unit filing and paperwork system.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


    • Basic computer knowledge.
    • Ability to type accurately.
    • Verbal/written skills necessary to interact positively with patients, physicians and staff.

    EDUCATION

    • High school graduate or GED.
    • Course in Medical Terminology preferred.
    • Certification as Health Unit Secretary preferred.

    EXPERIENCE

    • Prefer at least one year of experience in a healthcare setting.
