    Position Description


    This position has direct responsibility for the delivery of a youth horticulture training program to youth in the Harris County Juvenile Detention System.

    The incumbent will work with youth, faculty, staff, and volunteers to provide horticulture training in vegetable production, nursery production, greenhouse management, and career planning.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Performs the duties below; other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary:
    • Coordinate and implement programs at juvenile centers (The Opportunity Center, Youth Village, HCLA, others)
    • Assists in the development and administration of educational enhancement programs
    • Ensures effective communication of pertinent information to all staff, including those from outside agencies and volunteers, and ensures adherence to daily scheduled activities and appropriate uniform
    • Ensures a safe and secure environment for participants, staff, and volunteers
    • Evaluates the work of staff and volunteers to ensure that programs are of appropriate quality and that resources are used effectively
    • Supports 4-H and Youth Development program in Harris County and assists with implementation of 4-H action plan.
    • Communicates effectively with members, families, volunteers, and other staff.
    • Develops partnerships with relevant public and private organizations.
    • Ability to work within budget restrictions, including grant budgets.
    • Secures public and private support through fundraising and local grants.
    • Gathers and prepares information to submit to media regarding events, activities, and members.
    • Assists in the marketing, promotion, and evaluation of 4-H Youth Development programs.
    • Plans and implements educational workshops for youth and volunteers related to 4-H programs.

    Requirements


    Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, Education, or other closely related field

    Experience:

    • A minimum of three (3) years of work experience in creating and conducting horticulture, environmental, or agricultural education lessons

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Basic working knowledge of computers and related software comprised of Microsoft Excel, Work, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook
    • General horticulture knowledge
    • Possesses good verbal and written skills, comfortable with public speaking
    • Ability to follow a horticulture curriculum
    • Ability to teach the core competencies of the program to youth in the horticulture project
    • Ability to work with youth

    Licensure:

    • Valid driver's license (Texas by hire date) and good driving record
    • Access to a vehicle capable of carrying out the responsibilities of the position

    Preferences


    • Experience with propagation, soil science, landscape management, pesticide use, greenhouse operations, vegetable production
    • Professional certification/licenses in general horticulture fields such as: Texas Pesticide Applicator's License, TCNP, TCLP, TMCNP, ISA Certified Arborist, ASHS Certified Horticulturist

    Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

    • Monday - Friday | Flexible
    • Some Saturdays May Be Required

    Salary:

    • Depends on Qualifications
    • Based on 26 Pay Periods
    Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
