    Hastings Mutual is currently looking for an Associate Accountant to join its Financial Services team This is a great opportunity for a junior-level Accounting professional to be involved in a variety of related tasks and processes related to our financial records and data.

    Position Overview

    The Associate Accountant assists in the control and accuracy of the Company's incoming and disbursed cash, assists Accountants in preparing, reviewing, analyzing, and maintaining financial data and records timely and accurately, follows statutory and management guidelines, and demonstrates leadership qualities.

    Position Location & Work Format

    • This is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position, typically working Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Employees must be able to work at our Hastings, MI corporate headquarters, in a hybrid capacity consisting of weekly in-office and remote (from home) based work.
    Position Duties & Responsibilities
    • Proficiently performs all tasks of the Accounts Payable positions.
      • Fills in for the Accounts Payable positions as needed and reviews duties for effectiveness, efficiency, and accuracy.
    • Assists the Accountants in preparing, reviewing, analyzing, and maintaining, timely and accurately, financial data in accordance with statutory accounting principles and management guidelines in the areas of premiums, investments, reinsurance, losses, expenses, and taxes.
      • Assists the Accountants in preparing and posting journal entries and verifying the accuracy of the ledger to source documents.
      • Assists in the collaboration and verification of financial information from internal and external sources.
      • Assists the Accountant in preparing and filing all necessary National Association of Insurance Companies (NAIC), state and federal reports to comply with laws and regulations.
    • Completes special projects as assigned by the Accountants or leadership.
    • Keeps historical accounting records organized, ensuring that all information is available on short notice and is meeting the established retention schedule.
      • Adheres to assigned diary deadlines and maintain assigned electronic documents.
    • Assists in the continuing effort to automate accounting functions to improve efficiency and profitability.
    • Creates and maintains written procedures for all assigned duties allowing for training of others and assistance during absence.
    • Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
    • Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
    Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
    • Associates degree in Accounting or related field is preferred.
    • Statutory insurance accounting experience is preferred.
    • Demonstrated mathematical aptitude and calculator skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated PC skills including proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
