- Minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in the plumbing or HVAC trades, or the equivalent.
- Professional trade school certificate or equivalent document. Journeyman license required.
- Valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle policy.
- Demonstrates high level of independence on all plumbing and HVAC systems with the ability to plan and execute significant repairs and installations.
Includes domestic hot and cold water systems, drainage systems, hot water/chilled water systems, steam heating systems, vacuum systems, air pressure, VAV air, and exhaust air systems.
Understands relationships between systems. - Demonstrates ability to plan/install piping systems per code and trade practices for significant renovations and new installations.
- Demonstrates strong understanding of control systems.
- Is skilled in using common trade hand and power tools. Is skilled in use with specialty tools such as torches, threaders, flare, mechanical press. Uses multimeter, temperature gun and similar electronic testing equipment to diagnose problems.
- Demonstrates a thorough working knowledge of trade products including solder pipe joints, mechanical joints (flare, compression, press, thread), pipe types, brazing joints, high purity piping systems, chemical resistant drainage systems, duct distribution systems including fire and smoke dampers, filter racks, end terminals, etc. .
- Computer skills on laptop, tablet and/or smartphone including basic word processing, spreadsheets and ability to use building system programs and work control system.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
- Ability to participate and contribute to projects involving a high degree of complexity. Ability to analyze and evaluate issues and develop creating responsive solutions.
- Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
- Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.

- In response to assigned work orders, working independently, performs scheduled routine preventative maintenance tasks on College plumbing and HVAC systems. Maintenance includes visual inspection of the equipment; reading & interpreting operation gages; changing UV lamps, changing filters.
- Evaluates equipment and conditions looking for dirty, failing or defective accessories on equipment, and initiating appropriate work orders. In the course of maintenance, demonstrates understanding of equipment impact to other building components and system operations. For example, shutting an air handler off will likely require to have the return or exhaust fan turned off. Must understand the impact to occupants served by the unit.
- Plans/installs various piping HVAC components (not refrigerant) per codes and use applicable trade practices for significant renovations & new installations. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of piping systems, with primary focus on HVAC piping systems.
- Diagnoses the root causes of malfunctioning system or equipment using test equipment & diagnostic procedures.
- Uses air flow measuring devices; temperature reading devices (instantaneous & time recording); equipment self diagnostics.
- Repairs & works on heat recovery systems including heat wheels, run around loops, heat pipes and air to air heat exchangers.
- Repairs and works on humidification systems.
- Cleans and descales units; confirms operation.
- Repairs and understands atomizing humidification / cooling systems.
- Cleans and replaces/repairs nozzles.
- Seasonally maintains cooling towers, performs routine maintenance.
- Ensures pump operation; ensures fan operation, replace belts.
- Repairs and works on steam systems: steam trap replacement/rebuild; steam valve replacement/rebuild.
- Demonstrates working knowledge of building codes, specifically the Plumbing & Mechanical Codes. Demonstrates working knowledge of College Construction Guidelines.
- Uses the Campus Services server to obtain information such as as-built drawings and O&M Manuals. Able to read blueprints.
- For example, receives clear and concise instructions from coworkers; be educated accepting constructive input from coworkers performing work.
- While performing maintenance work learns the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.
- Works with senior Plumber/HVAC Technician IV on significant repairs, significant renovations and new installations.
- Collaborates with building automation shop to diagnose and repair systems.
- Works with and mentors Plumber/HVAC Tech I and II explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions.
