ACP is proud to offer a summer internship program which runs for approximately 8 weeks from Tuesday, June 16 – Thursday, August 6, 2026. These positions are required to work on a hybrid office schedule out of our Washington, DC headquarters and, as such, applicants must be local to the DC area or able to relocate to DC for the 8-week period. Legal internships are paid $25/hour on a semi-monthly pay schedule.

Position Overview

The Corporate Legal Affairs Intern contributes to ACP's internal legal operations by working with the Head of Corporate Legal Affairs on matters related to nonprofit governance, regulatory compliance, contracts, and organizational policies. This role provides exposure to how in-house legal teams support a complex trade association and its affiliated nonprofit entities.

Working closely with legal leadership, the intern will contribute to research, documentation, and coordination across a range of corporate legal functions, gaining insight into how legal guidance supports ACP's mission, governance, and day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.

  • Conduct legal research related to nonprofit governance and compliance requirements for 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) organizations.
  • Contribute to internal audits, policy reviews, and updates to legal operating guidelines and documentation.
  • Review federal and state rules related to lobbying, political contributions, and nonprofit compliance and summarize key considerations.
  • Contribute to the review and organization of contracts, agreements, and procurement materials for vendors, consultants, and partners.
  • Help maintain and update contract templates, records, and tracking systems.
  • Contribute to board and committee coordination, including preparation of agendas, resolutions, minutes, and governance materials.
  • Help maintain corporate records, bylaws, policies, and director documentation.
  • Conduct research related to labor, employment, and workplace compliance issues, as appropriate.
  • Help track and organize intellectual property records and support review of trademark usage and related materials.
  • Contribute to additional legal research, documentation, and coordination tasks as needed to support the Corporate Legal Affairs function.
  • Summer Project & Professional Development

Over the course of the summer, the intern will contribute to one or more defined focus areas within the Corporate Legal Affairs function. The scope of this work will be refined during the first week of the internship based on departmental priorities and the intern's interests.

Through this work and day-to-day contributions, the intern will have the opportunity to:

  • Build an understanding of how in-house legal teams support nonprofit and trade association operations.
  • Gain experience with corporate governance, contract processes, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Develop skills in legal research, issue spotting, documentation, and professional writing.
  • Observe how legal considerations intersect with policy, operations, and executive decision-making.
  • Gain exposure to legal issues affecting multiple departments and organizational levels.
  • Qualifications

    Required:

  • Current law student (1L or 2L) with an interest in corporate, nonprofit, or regulatory law.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and functions.
  • Preferred (but not required):

  • Coursework or experience related to nonprofit law, corporate governance, or regulatory compliance.
  • Interest in clean energy, trade associations, or mission-driven organizations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and document management tools.
  • Job Conditions

ACP operates in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with an ambitious agenda and a highly motivated staff. Interns will be supported by their manager and team as they learn and contribute to work with real deadlines and priorities. This role may involve working across multiple tasks and adapting to shifting timelines with guidance. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States. ACP will not sponsor applicants for work visas. ACP is an Equal Opportunity Employer. For more information, visit
