    Overview

    LMI is seeking a skilled Optics and Optical Sensors Engineer/Scientist (SME)in Colorado Springs, CO or Chantilly, VA.

    The Optics and Optical Sensors Engineer/Scientist is the SME on all matter related to optics, optical sensors, and optical systems, and ensures an accurate portrayal of all aspects of such items (e.g., capabilities, development, testing, operations, processing) in technical discussions, and in the development and execution of studies, analyses, algorithms, models, simulations, and other technical products and efforts described in the SOW. Occasional travel is required.

    Responsibilities

    • Acts as an advisor and provides technical support to the government
    • Recognized as an electro-optical subject matter expert, specifically in the areas of ground and space-based space object surveillance and identification (SOSI) systems, electro-optical sensors and systems (including visual, near infrared, and infrared spectral regimes), electro-optical processing, characterization, integration and test of electro-optical systems and the associated supporting electronics and calibration processes
    • Supports the Systems Program Office (SPO) in a technical capacity for planning, execution, monitoring, and oversight of optical payload systems development and acquisitions that advance the National Reconnaissance Office's (NRO) space resiliency posture
    • Applies advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts to develop novel electro-optical system solutions
    • Develops and maintains an in-depth understanding of system level requirements for assigned systems and the design features that satisfy these requirements
    • Oversees the design and development of Optical payload systems and components
    • Assists the government in developing concept of operations (CONOPS) and approaches for electro-optical systems
    • Leads and prepares trade studies, system performance assessments, design optimization studies, and system design assessments
    • Ensures research and development (R&D) efforts are planned and conducted on sound engineering best practices including management of technical risks
    • Providing oversight of acquisitions, with specific focus on the electro-optical payload systems elements, functionality, interfaces, manufacture, build, test, and operations to ensure end-to-end system closure and satisfaction of mission requirements
    • Develops documents and briefings to communicate work status, briefs government and industry as required
    • Design and implement tests to verify optical, mechanical and electrical acceptability of electro-optical systems hardware
    • Review space electro-optical systems test data and lead anomaly investigation and resolution

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • Bachelor of Science degree
    • Ten (10) years of experience in the field of electro optical sensors and systems (including visual, near infrared, and infrared spectral regimes) analysis, design, development, fabrication, integration, test, and operations.
    • Extensive knowledge of electro-optic processing, characterization, integration, and test of electro-optical systems and the associated supporting electronics and calibration
    • Active TS/SCI with CI Polygraph required. US Citizenship required

    Desired:

    • Graduate degree in a related technical discipline
    • Fifteen (15) years of experience in the field of electro optical sensors and systems (including visual, near infrared, and infrared spectral regimes) analysis, design, development, fabrication, integration, test and operations.
    • Comprehensive background in all types of optical systems, including systems employing both passive and active control elements.
    • Five (5) years NRO experience

    Target salary range: $123,000 - $219,000. Final compensation will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to your skills, experience, education, and/or certifications.
