Posting Summary:
The TC NEXT Career Office at Teachers College, Columbia University, offers students and
alumni timely, essential career support as they prepare for internships, full-time job searches, and overall career progression. Since its inception in 2020, the TC NEXT team and office have seen a steady increase in student participation in coaching & programming.
The office is seeking a Career Coach who will be a part of a team of experts that delivers critical support to Teachers College students and alumni as they navigate their professional pathways. Our Master's and Doctoral students bring diverse professional experience, goals, and expertise, and TC NEXT offers holistic support to ensure their success throughout their careers.
Job Summary/Basis Function:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Coaching and Programming, the Career Coach will work alongside team members to administer career support services and to conceive, develop, and execute programming designed to meet student and alumni needs. The Career Coach will also work with faculty and program administrators to strengthen students' preparation and core competencies, leading to student success in the job market and the fulfillment of individual professional goals. The incumbent will bring expertise and credentials to the role and work alongside the TC NEXT team to execute the office's vision.
Career Coaching:
- Provide individualized career advisement to students and alumni through one-on-one
sessions, supporting a wide range of career development needs across the career
lifecycle.
- Review and provide feedback on resumes, cover letters, curricula vitae, personal
statements, and professional profiles (e.g., LinkedIn).
- Advise on job and internship search strategies, networking approaches, employer
engagement, and career exploration tools.
- Support students and alumni in preparing for interviews through mock interviews,
behavioral interview coaching, and feedback.
- Provide guidance on salary negotiation, offer evaluation, and professional
decision-making.
- Assist students and alumni in identifying and utilizing career resources aligned with their
academic interests and professional goals.
- Facilitate scheduled drop-in advising hours and provide timely electronic review of
career-related documents.
Career Development & Programming:
- Develop, plan, and execute TC NEXT-branded workshops, learning modules, and
presentations (e.g., in-class) for students and alumni.
- Assist the staff with all arrangements of career development events.
- Make data-driven recommendations for new programming formats and content.
- Coordinate programs and services in conjunction with faculty and academic programs to
ensure that programs, services, and resources are directly correlated to academic
departments. Collaborate with faculty across the College to implement key events that
support the mission of the program, the College, and the Office
- Collaborate with other members of TC NEXT Team
- Contribute to survey design and evaluation to gauge the effectiveness of programming
as measured through student, alumni, faculty, and inter-departmental feedback
- Use assessment data, participation trends, and feedback to make informed
recommendations for new or enhanced programming formats and content.
Team engagement & Community Outreach:
- Attend weekly TC NEXT team meetings and regular team retreats, and participate in
optional team events (such as brainstorming sessions) when possible.
- Collaborate with TC NEXT team and members of the TC community to identify and
respond to the career and academic planning needs of students and alumni.
- Support the execution, communication, and promotion of TC NEXT programs, services,
and initiatives across campus.
- Represent TC NEXT at events
- Participate in student meetings, departmental outreach, employer information sessions,
College-wide committees, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or the equivalent of education and training in a professional and
student service-oriented field
- 2-4 years of relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience
from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired
- Experience supporting early-career advising, career exploration, and goal-setting.
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects
- Excellent verbal, written, digital, interpersonal, customer service, and presentation skills,
with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and have an aptitude to learn new technology
- Ability to work effectively with diverse constituents, including employers, international
students/alumni, faculty, and administration.
- Experience with first-time job seekers and early-stage professionals
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and contribute effectively in a
team-based environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or other advanced degree in a relevant field such as higher education,
counseling, student affairs, psychology, education, or a related discipline.
- Experience advising or supporting Master's and PhD students, postdoctoral scholars,
and/or international students and scholars.
- Prior experience working in student affairs, career services, or higher education,
including program development and special event planning.
- Experience working at a college or university with a large and diverse international
student population.
- Knowledge of career development theory, assessment, and best practices.
Certification in Assessment, specifically MBTI or Strong Interest Inventory
- Proven ability and experience working at a college or university with a large international
student population
- Experience using career management platforms, CRM systems, or data tools to track
engagement and assess outcomes.
Salary Range:
$70,000-$72,000

The salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.

Hybrid/Remote
Teachers College maintains a hybrid work environment, which provides employees with flexible work arrangements while ensuring we preserve the important aspects of our unique in-person college-campus culture. Depending on role and business needs, colleagues will either work onsite or in a hybrid model (a combination of in-office and virtual days). Employees are expected to live within a 150-mile radius of the College.
