The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform

Duties Description Job Description:

The New York State Institute for Basic Research (IBR), the research arm of the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full time Research Scientist 2 (Research Coordinator) position in the Human Genetics Department, with some related work involving the Jervis clinic.

NYS OPWDD IBR provides a professional setting in a world-renowned research facility located on Staten Island, NY, on a wooded, suburban campus with free off-street parking.

Attendance at and participation in professional meetings and conferences is encouraged and financially supported, and publication fees in professional journals are supported through the agency budget.

Telecommuting work plan is negotiable.

The compensation package includes New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP) insurance, a generous sick leave and vacation package, vesting in the NYS pension fund, and a deferred compensation plan.

NYS benefits include tuition reimbursement and dental and optical coverage.

Duties/Responsibilities:

IBR has undertaken the mission of developing a Genomics Core Facility, with research goals focused on intellectual disability and autism.

The Research Scientist 2/Coordinator we seek to hire will have the unique opportunity to play a significant role in the development of this effort.

The selected candidate will be focused on detailed phenotyping and medical characterization of rare genetic syndromes presenting in the Jervis clinic and/or involving mutations in genes already under study, such NAA10, NAA15, ANKRD11, and TAF1.

The coordinator will work with Dr.

Gholson Lyon and other members of the Jervis clinic (including a genetic counselor) on detailed phenotyping of humans with these genetic syndromes.

Some clinical assessment may also be done remotely over videoconference.

The coordinator will also work with existing staff in the laboratory on the collection, organization and analysis of all human phenotyping data.

The coordinator will also work with the Principal Investigator and other members of the Jervis clinic on human regulatory aspects of the ongoing studies at IBR.

The coordinator will be trained on how to administer quantitative scales concerning the research participants, such as Vineland-3 with the parents and possibly the Bayley scale of Infant and Toddler Development.

The position involves independent analysis of the phenotyping data, to address new hypotheses that will be postulated with the PI, stemming from the clinical observations.

Extensive data analysis using Excel and graphing with Graphpad Prism or a similar graphing program is expected.

The coordinator should write first drafts of manuscripts, followed by extensive revision with the PI and other members of the Jervis clinic.

The position requires a high degree of autonomy and drive, with an expectation that the coordinator will work independently and with direction provided on a regular basis.

The Human Genetics Department and Specialty Clinical Laboratories (SCL) at IBR work in collaboration to complete laboratory testing both for clinical purposes and to support the research protocols in place within the Human Genetics laboratories at IBR.

We are seeking to fill a Program Operations Specialist 1 position, where the incumbent will support the program and staff of our Human Genetics (HG) Department including the Specialty Clinical Laboratories (SCL), working in conjunction with each other and with the developing Genomics Core Facility.

The individual will be supervised by the Research Group Head of the department/laboratory.

This position involves completing procedures needed for testing protocols, basic laboratory procedures, data entry, billing and compilation/tracking, assisting with cataloging and maintaining all records as per the regulatory requirements; supporting supervisor in scheduling Competency and Proficiency testing programs; and scheduling periodic and as needed maintenance on instrumentation/equipment.

Staff will address the administrative/programmatic needs of the department/laboratory, handle technical/programmatic duties in the laboratory and participate in the implementation of programs and services that address the diagnostic needs of our patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Ensure compliance with CLIA, CMS, and NYS DOH CLEP requirements, including maintenance of laboratory permits, inspection readiness, deficiency tracking, and corrective action documentation.

Coordinate Quality Management System (QMS) activities including SOP control, document versioning, deviation tracking, and continuous audit preparedness.

Serve as the primary administrative liaison to the Laboratory Director for regulatory compliance, personnel documentation, training records, and inspection coordination.

Support early-stage development of the Genomics Core Facility by assisting with administrative infrastructure, documentation frameworks, regulatory alignment, and coordination of new genomic workflows as they are established.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree preferred in a biological science, or a clinical degree, with publications or other work demonstrating capability with data analysis and graphing.

Some clinical experience is highly desirable, as this would facilitate interacting with families and also summarizing/tabulating detailed clinical information. Prior experience with the clinical scales mentioned above is also highly
