    Responsibilities:


    The Advanced Sources and Detector (ASD) Project Office is responsible for the design,fabrication, installation, and commissioning of an ~ 22 MeV linear induction electron accelerator, through the coordination of efforts at Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).

    Nicknamed Scorpius.

    The successful candidate will work as the Deputy Chief Engineer for the "Machine" for the ASD Project, shepherding design to meet beam physics and installation requirements at the NNSS, for all four partners (LANL, LLNL, SNL, NNSS.) In this role, the deputy will work closely with both the Chief Engineer for the Machine and Chief Engineer for the Facilities.

    This position includes a high degree of autonomy and will report to the NNSS ECSE Operations Director and ASD Senior Team Lead (STL) for NNSS scope.

    The focus of this activity will be on fabrication, installation, and integration of Scorpius hardware within the Integrated Test Stand (ITS) in North Las Vegas (NLV) and the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experiments (PULSE) Complex.

    Key Responsibilities
    Work as the Deputy Chief Engineer for the Machine (ASD-CEM) for the ASD Project.

    The ASD-CEM is responsible for the technical adequacy of the ASD Project radiography system, and the deputy will support the ASD-CEM.

    In this position you will be responsible to ensure the design meets beam physics, Code of Record, transportation, assembly, installation, and operational requirements.

    The Deputy ASD-CEM will work closely with the Chief Engineerfor Facility (CEF) to ensure successful installation, integration, and operation of Scorpius within the Integrated Test Stand and PULSE Complex, a Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility under construction at the NNSS.

    Work with the ASD Chief Scientist and ASD-DPD to ensure the overall ASD system architecture definition meets the radiography requirements described in ASD Project Requirements Documents;
    Collaborate with the ASD Systems Engineering Manager (SEM) on executing the ASD Project systems engineering, plans, processes, and procedures;
    With the ASD-CEF, provide leadership to the ASD Project "design office" staff resources provided by ASD-Senior Team Leads (STLs), administering design process protocols and procedures as established by the ASD-Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) procedures;
    Act as a reviewer and final approver of technical baseline design documents for the ASD Project;
    Provide a leadership role in application and evaluation of ASD design concepts and design practices;

    Participate in the ASD Project risk management process;
    Assist in developing the integrated cost and schedule plan for the ASD Project;
    Ensure applicable and appropriate QA/QC requirements for ASD are applied during the project lifecycle;
    Participate as a member of the ASD Project Director's Change Control Board;

    Interface with NNSS, Sandia, and LLNL, the ASD Systems Engineering Manager, and ASD partner Lead Design Engineers to ensure Scorpius-appropriate inputs and processes are in place at CD-4 for operational lifecycle.

    Supportas appropriate, Assembly, Fabrication, and Installation activities at the Integrated Test Stand and PULSE;
    Support the development, updating and implementation of Activity Level Work Control consistent with requirements and partner provided procedures.
    Support, as appropriate, assembly, fabrication, and installation activities at the Integrated Test Stand and PULSE;

    Work with the Lead Design Engineers (LDE) and Chief Engineers to apply lessons learned and process updates from the Integrated Test Stand activities to those at PULSE.

    Provide a leadership role in evaluating technical design tradeoffs and balancing technical risk among systems; and
    Provide mentoring to engineering and project staff.


    Qualifications:

    Minimum Education and Experience:
    Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees
    Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor's degree in engineering
    Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB)
    Or Professional Engineer license

    Plus at least 14 years' relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
    Engineering Expertise Demonstrated expertise in engineering design, development, fabrication, and production in a highly constrained and evolving environment. Expertise in fundamental engineering and material science principles and practices.
    Extensive experience with the engineering of accelerator systems. In particular, experience with accelerator vacuum systems, thermal management systems, control systems, machine alignment, testing, maintenance, and operations. Additionally, you will need to have experience generating documentation pertaining to design, procurement, testing and QA/QC.
    Technical Leadership


    Significant experience leading projects by assembling teams across multiple organizations, establishing project plans, assigning tasks to team members, and reporting progress.

    Proven ability to reach milestones and produce deliverables while remaining with budget constraints.
    Problem Solving

    Demonstrated ability to generate and apply innovative approaches to solve complex problems. Proven record of achievements in a technically-relevant field. Demonstrated ability to organize and track evaluations and completed work.
    Communication and Teamwork

    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and through written documentation. Experience in communicating with coworkers, laboratory management and customers. Proven record of working effectively as a team member. Demonstrated ability to seek technical input from experts. Recognized ability to lead projects involving multiple team members.
    An active DoE Q clearance desired.
    Significant experience working within a 'project' environment. DOE 413.3B experience is highly desirable.
    General knowledge of CREO, PDMLink (Windchill) or other document management systems.
    Working experience at one or more of the NNSA design labs.
    Working knowledge of practices related to linear induction accelerators.

    Ability to manage working at multiple sites- the Losee Road facility in North las Vegas, Nevada, the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwestof Las Vegas, Nevada) and as needed, LANL ( Los Alamos National Laboratories) and SNL (Sandia National Laboratories).

    Work Schedule for this postition will be 4/10's, Monday through Thursday (subject to change).
    Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    Must possess a valid driver's license.

    MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.

    Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.

    Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

    In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S.

    citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order472.2, "Personnel Security". If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
    Department of Energy Q Clearance

    (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required.
