    Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is actively searching for an exceptional and experienced Senior Safety and Health Professional to join the Utility.

    This position supports general safety, health and environmental functions focusing on construction and industrial hygiene efforts, while partnering with leadership and front-line staff.

    • Administers all aspects of safety programs within a department.

    • Formulates and writes safety and industrial hygiene policies and procedures ensuring compliance with federal and state safety regulations.

    • Ensures enforcement of safety regulations through line supervisors.
    • Evaluate safety and health programs related to Construction, Ergonomics, and Industrial Hygiene safety and health standards.
    • Conduct job site safety evaluations and follows up on safety violations.
    • Able to educate staff on safety best practices.
    • Utilize noise dosimeters, air monitors and other equipment.
    • Develops Job Safety Analysis and works with front line staff on follow up training.
    • Works with utility safety committees providing safety guidance and works with management to facilitate implementation.
    • Maintains regular contact with Department heads, City, state and federal safety officials and experts.
    • Reviews contractor Health and Safety plans and monitor construction projects for safety compliance.
    • Collaborates with other safety team members on a variety of projects and program reviews.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Experience:
    Three (3) years of experience in a safety or health related field or equivalent field.

    Education:
    A Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene. Biology, Engineering, or another related field.

    Experience and Education Equivalency:

    Combinations of appropriate education, training, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.


    Work Environment/Physical Demands:

    • Required to wear protective equipment, follow safety procedures and exercise caution during inspections.
    • Requires being on call 24 hours/day for response to emergencies.
    • Work is generally performed in an office environment.

    License, Certification and Other Requirements:
    At the time of appointment must hold a valid Washington State Driver License.

    You will be most successful in this role if you possess one or more of the following:


    • Certified Industrial Hygienist or Certified Safety Professional (preferred but not required).
    • Experience with medical surveillance programs, respirator fit testing, noise monitoring, and industrial sampling.
    • Experience with database management and creating reports.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills including ability to provide training presentations.
    • Familiarity with Confined Space, Trenching/Shoring, Hazardous Waste Operations in Construction and Traffic Control regulations.
    • Reviewing and Developing Safety Procedures.
    • Ability to facilitate technical training and presentations.
    • Stong skills in working collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Excellent customer service skills for internal and external customers.
    • Skills in Safety Management Systems and Microsoft 365.

    Workplace Environment:
    Employees will be required to come into the office five days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

    The full salary range for this position is $ $60.32 per hour.
