    Objectives

    The Knox County Engineer's Office is seeking a full-time Highway Worker III to join their team. This is a classified, bargaining unit position. Among their many duties, a Highway Worker III performs snowplowing, sand/salt application and utilizing a dump truck.

    Essential Functions

    30% Performs snow plowing activities and spreads sand and/or salt for snow and ice control utilizing a dump truck;

    29% Performs patching work on holes in roadways to include preparing hole for cold patch, adding mix and tamping down using shovels, rakes, brooms and rolling with truck tires or asphalt rollers; digging/removing/hauling old hot mix from work site, hauling/dumping/raking/rolling/priming base rock, adding hot mix and rolling with roller;

    10% Performs hauling activities to include removing dirt from ditch cleaning and/or berming activities;

    10% Performs landscaping duties such as cutting grass, weeds, roadside foliage and removing trees and brush using equipment such as brush chipper, chain/power saws, tractors with side and rear mowers, and weed-eaters;

    10% Performs traffic control in the vicinity of job sites with the placement of traffic safety warning/control signs/devices to protect the public and the road crew;

    5% Perform sweeping activities on roadway intersections utilizing power/hand/brooms and truck;

    5% Performs preventative maintenance and minor repair to equipment to include but not limited to, checking and maintaining proper fluid levels such as antifreeze, power steering, hydraulic, lubricating moving parts, checking tires, belts, lights, brakes and general cleaning of vehicles both inside and out, replacing lights;

    1% Maintains accurate daily reports as they relate to the work assignments and as required.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Incumbent works under direct or general supervision and follows established policies, procedures, work rules and terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Performs all of the duties of Highway Worker I and all other duties as assigned. Monitors that all safety requirements are in place and all safety procedures are followed to protect crew, other employees and property. Must maintain a telephone at place of residence or a cellular phone.

    Job Standards

    Must possess a valid high school diploma or GED, plus experience in construction or related work or an equivalent combination of training and/or related work experience. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Commercial Driver's License, Class A, with tanker endorsement.

    Ability to: interpret a variety of instructions, policies and procedures pertaining to work assignments in written, oral, picture or schedule form and to communicate in common English language; understand and apply general highway construction, repair and maintenance procedures; perform a variety of unskilled to advanced skilled tasks relevant to construction, repair and maintenance of the county roadway system, rights-of-way and bridges.

    EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
    Ability to operate and use a two-way radio, a variety of small hand/power tools, and all light equipment in order to complete the work assignments.

    INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Incumbent's work effort involves prolonged and frequent standing, lifting, walking, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling, carrying, shoveling, hammering, tamping, bending, stooping, crouching and sitting activities using all major muscle groups and must be able to lift 50 pounds. Neck mobility is necessary when operating equipment and/or vehicles. Manual dexterity is required to operate tools and equipment. Normal vision, including depth perception, and hearing acuity are required due to working in close proximity to heavy equipment and moving traffic. Incumbent must be able to work steadily and accurately at a moderate speed and at various heights to complete work assignments, may perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods.

    Job Location:
    Work is performed outside where incumbent is exposed to extremes in outdoor temperatures and weather conditions, noise, dirt, grease, vibrations, acid, electrical and mechanical hazards, burns, dust and chemicals. Work may be monotonous and exposure to unfavorable health and safety factors could be present. The incumbent may experience eyestrain when plowing snow. The incumbent is required to wear personal protective equipment as required while performing work activities.
