    Definition


    Under supervision, this position learns to perform a variety of library work, particularly working with children, including craft projects, fifteen (15) hours per week for three (3) months.

    This position will learn and perform a variety of office assistance tasks, basic public and technical service support functions and related work as required.


    Examples of Important and Essential Duties

    (The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)


    Assists with public and technical service functions; assists at the circulation desk by answering patron questions, locating materials, checking out materials and collecting fines; learns to maintain records and files in the library; performs daily cash count; assists with the processing and upkeep of the periodicals collection; re-shelves returned materials; performs library inventory and updates library records as instructed; learns to perform the processing and repair of library media, materials and equipment; learns policies and procedures and instructs patrons in the use of library resources; learns to use computerized library information systems and databases; performs a variety of office support functions; updates records and reports as instructed; composes, types, formats and proofreads a wide variety of reports, letters, orders and memoranda as instructed.


    Desirable Qualifications

    Knowledge of:

    Modern office methods and procedures, computer equipment and software programs. Basic knowledge of library functions and services. Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Basic business and recordkeeping principles.


    Ability to:


    Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment, and software programs. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Perform a variety of typing, filing, and general office support assignments. Maintain information, data, reports and files accurately.

    Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and other staff when explaining the functions and policies of the County Library System.

    Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Work evenings and/or weekends, Learn to perform a variety of public service and technical support assignments. Experience working with children and craft projects is desirable.


    Training and Experience:

    Any combination of training and experience, which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

    A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate and two (2) years of general office assistance experience or completion of office skills training or prior library experience as a library volunteer or aide.

    Experience working with children and craft projects is desirable.


    License and/or Certificate:

    Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

    TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


    Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX.


    TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Work is performed in office and library environments; likely continuous contact with other staff and the public.
