    Summary

    The Street Maintenance Equipment Operator operates and maintains equipment used to transport personnel, haul materials, supplies, and other equipment to and from various job sites.

    Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in large-scale field operations for street construction, roadway, storm drainage, sidewalk maintenance, and repair projects
  • Assists Crew Chief in hauling and compaction of materials associated with street repair
  • Operates standard and tandem dump trucks for the hauling of dirt/backfill, forms, etc.; operates backhoe to remove existing concrete and material
  • Participates in loading and unloading of materials
  • Performs manual labor tasks (digging trenches, etc.)
  • Performs routine inspections of equipment for mechanical readiness and safety
  • Maintain equipment or report any malfunctions to supervisors.
  • Complies with work and safety rules, OSHA regulations, and work hazard rules/regulations

    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Safety- Knowledge of OSHA, City, and Federal rules and regulations, as well as work hazards and applicable safety precautions of the assigned work.
  • Transportation- Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by road specifically,
  • including laws and ordinances regulating the operation of vehicles.
  • Customer and Personal Service- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and
  • personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and
  • evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Construction- Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and procedures used in the construction and maintenance of streets.
  • Operation and Control- Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Operation Monitoring- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Equipment Maintenance- Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and
  • what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Troubleshooting- Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Active Listening- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the
  • points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Time Management- Managing one's own time and the time of others.
  • Control Precision- The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or vehicle.
  • Depth Perception- The ability to judge which of several objects is close or further away from you, or judge
  • the distance between you and an object.
  • Near and Far Vision- The ability to see details at a close range or a distance.
  • Manual Dexterity- The ability to quickly move your hand, arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or
  • assemble objects.
  • Rate Control- The ability to time your movements or movements of a piece of equipment in anticipation
  • of changes in speed or direction of a moving object or scene.
  • Reaction Time- The ability to quickly respond to a signal when it appears.
  • Oral Comprehension- The ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Written Comprehension- The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  • Physical Abilities include but are not limited to: sitting, standing, bending, twisting, reaching,
  • kneeling/squatting, walking, driving, crawling, climbing, lifting and carrying (up to 75lbs), shoveling, pushing, and pulling.
    • TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND MACHINES: Dump Trucks, backhoes, hand tools, etc. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Extreme Temperatures possible, outdoors; Some physical activity, a lot of time spent in heavy machinery.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Three years related work experience

    OR

    High School Graduate or Equivalent and one year related work experience

    AND

    Required: CDL A or B depending on area of assignment

    Conditions of Employment

    The City's Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

    Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate's written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

    Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
