    Job Description / Essential Elements:

    WEST CONTRA COSTA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

    MIDDLE/JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL VICE-PRINCIPAL

    Primary Function

    Assists the Principal with the planning, organization, and administration of the school and the educational program. Responsibilities such as curriculum development, instructional program leadership, guidance program, supervision, community relations, student activities, and/or in-service training may be assigned.

    Shall supervise and evaluate the assigned certificated and classified staff.

    Major Responsibilities

    May be assigned any of the following duties:

    1. Supervises the instructional program through teacher conferences, classroom visitations, lesson plan review, and teacher evaluation.
    2. Serves as member of Secondary Curriculum Committee, as coordinator of an assigned subject area district chairperson's committee, and as a member of various special district study committees.
    3. Develops the master program, arranges for the scheduling of students, and provides articulation with feeder elementary schools and receiving high schools.
    4. Coordinates the counseling and guidance program and the testing program with the instructional program.
    5. Coordinates student conduct and discipline programs.
    6. Coordinates student activity programs.
    7. Assists Principal and overall maintenance and operation of the school plant.
    8. Promotes the development and revision of curriculum and courses of study through cooperative interaction with department chairpersons and department members.
    9. Plans with the librarian and textbook clerk for the general operation of the school library and textbook room. Orders textbooks and other instructional materials.
    10. Supervises special education programs.
    11. Assists and supervises substitute teachers.
    12. Supervises ancillary personnel: student teachers, instructional assistants, counselor aides, security personnel, adult volunteers, work experience tutors, teacher aides.
    13. Coordinates and participates in home-school functions.
    14. Develops and participates in programs for in-service training and professional conferences.
    15. Provides communication through bulletins (daily, weekly, monthly, opening, closing, special) and schedules of supervision (before and after school, lunch periods, hall duty).
    16. Provides procedures for all steps of report card marking and processing.
    17. Coordinates student non-instructional services: student orientation, government, activity program, assemblies, pictures, and scholastic recognition activities.
    18. Orients new teachers and substitute teachers.
    19. Confers with the Principal on personnel matters.
    20. Performs other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications

    Knowledge and Skills:

    1. Ability to demonstrate through training and experience the qualities of leadership essential to the successful administration of a secondary school.
    2. Knowledge of the social, personal, and physical development of young adolescents.
    3. Knowledge of effective middle/junior high school teaching strategies, curricular programs, and materials.

    Education, Training, and Experience:

    1. Post graduate work in school administration, curriculum and instruction, or a related field.
    2. Successful experience as a classroom teacher.
    3. Progressively responsible experience in providing leadership in a school or district setting.
    4. Shall hold an appropriate school administration credential.
