Mission/Job Purpose
Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church (CHPC) in Kingsport, TN seeks a Choral Director to lead and coordinate the Choral Music Ministry alongside other staff and lay leaders.
This person will incorporate a diversity of music styles and songs as they seek to engage individuals of all ages to participate in meaningful ways.
This part-time position should take between 10-15 hours a week. This position is accountable to the Head of Staff and will work closely with the Worship and Music Committee.Attributes Required:
Appreciates the role of music for all ages in the worship service
Demonstrates leadership, organization, and communication skills with an ability to work effectively without immediate supervision
Shows a high degree of musicianship
Gifted in teaching and inspiring both new and experienced vocalists and musicians
Collaborates effectively with the pastor and other musical staff
Versatile, flexible, and can adapt to changing priorities as needed
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
The Choral Director is responsible to work according to the policies and procedures established by the Session and Head of Staff.
These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Works closely with the pastor in the selection of music for worship. In keeping with the Presbyterian Book of Order W a and b), the Choral Director will confer with the pastor on a regular basis as to ensure all musical offerings are appropriate for a particular service.
Develops, communicates, and implements worship plans in collaboration with the Pastor and other musical staff, including song suggestion, music liturgy, logistics, and creative expressions.
Fosters musical programming for children and youth, including occasional in-service participation and practices to prepare.
Develops a richer style of worship within a liturgically Reformed service which integrates both traditional and modern elements. This includes conducting the chancel choir and coordinating with the praise team and a variety of instrumentalists and ensembles.
Maintains the music library by identifying new songs that are consistent with our theology and mission and periodically purging music no longer used.
Leads music for special services such as holidays, weddings, funerals, and other services as requested. Coordinates other music staff as needed to support these services.
Manages the choral music budget and selection of guest musicians, including the facilitation of all tuning and repair for musical instruments and equipment.
Attends or leads meetings as requested or assigned, including regular music planning meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
Education/Competencies:
Bachelor's degree in Music and or related experience
Previous experience directing a church choir
Proficient in sight reading printed score, with additional preference given to reading lead/chord sheets
Able to create simple music arrangements to enhance contemporary musical offerings
Personal Characteristics:
Personal profession of faith, integrity and reliability, positive and encouraging outlook, interpersonal skills with diverse people, collaborative approach with staff, musicians, and volunteers
Compensation:
Commensurate with education, training, and experience
