Location: Pagosa Springs Medical Center (On-Site Role, Pagosa Springs, CO)
Position Summary
Pagosa Springs Medical Center is seeking an experienced Manager of Health Information Management (HIM) to lead the daily operations and strategic direction of the HIM Department. This role is responsible for the integrity, accuracy, security, and availability of patient health records while ensuring full compliance with federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.
The HIM Manager plays a critical leadership role in medical record management, coding oversight, data quality, release of information, privacy compliance, and department performance, supporting both high-quality patient care and organizational sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the Health Information Management department
- Ensure accurate, complete, and secure patient medical records
- Manage medical record coding, data quality, and release of information processes
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies
- Lead and supervise HIM staff, including hiring, training, evaluations, coaching, and discipline
- Maintain expertise in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding standards and reimbursement methodologies
- Monitor and improve documentation quality and data integrity within the electronic health record (EHR)
- Develop, implement, and maintain HIM policies, procedures, and workflows
- Serve as a subject-matter expert on health information, privacy, confidentiality, and record retention
- Collaborate with Revenue Cycle, Informatics, IT, Compliance, Risk Management, and clinical leadership
- Prepare and present departmental reports, metrics, and performance indicators
- Manage departmental budgets, staffing, scheduling, and payroll approval
- Lead department readiness for audits, inspections, and unannounced surveys
- Participate in organizational committees and performance improvement initiatives

QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or a related field required
Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a healthcare environment
- Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or management experience in an electronic health record setting
- Medical record coding experience strongly preferred
- Experience in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) environment preferred
Licensure & Certifications
- RHIA or RHIT certification required
- National Coding Certification through AHIMA or AAPC required
- Current AHA BLS (Heart Saver) certification required
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of federal and state healthcare regulations and accreditation standards
- Expertise in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding
- Understanding of reimbursement methodologies
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, databases, and project management tools
- Excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Office-based work environment with frequent interruptions
- Prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, and data review
- Regular interaction with staff, leadership, vendors, and external agencies
- Base Compensation Range: $59,800 - $92,456 annual, based on 0 to 22 years of relevant experience. "Relevant experience" means relevant to the employee's responsibilities set forth in the job description as determined by the HR Manager, CAO, applicable department manager/director and applicable senior leader.
- Starting Work Bonus: This position is eligible for a starting work bonus of up to $5,000. Eligibility, amount, and payment terms are subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center's compensation policies and may vary based on position, experience, and employment status. Bonus payments, if applicable, are typically issued after the employee has met required employment and service criteria.
- Moving Expense Reimbursement: This position is eligible for a moving expense reimbursement of up to $3,000. Reimbursement is subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center's relocation policy and requires prior approval. Eligible expenses and reimbursement amounts may vary based on position and individual circumstances. Reimbursement is processed in accordance with established policy and applicable tax regulations.
- Benefits: Benefits include generous paid time off, separate sick leave, health, dental, vision, life and AD&D insurance, long-term disability and option for short-term disability, and retirement plan with employer contribution.
