- Provide technical and supervisory leadership over complex, major design and development projects. Assumes responsibility for successful completion (schedule, performance, cost) of systems and sub-systems.
- Originate and communicate concepts which could lead to new projects. Develop potential applications to exploit new business opportunities.
- Produce innovative technical solutions to customers problems.
- Responsible for carrying out specific engineering project technical assignments as part of larger program objectives in the design and development of products, test equipment, or processes.
- Plan and lead experiments to evaluate operating characteristics of products or processes. Translate experimental results into design criteria.
- Participate in the determination of design requirements. Recommend design architecture. Determine design feasibility, evaluate design alternatives, and select optimal design approach. Consult with other engineering personnel to resolve complex design alternatives. Collaborate with the project team to solve complex technical problems, resolve design issues, and manage risk (technical and hazards). Maintain liaisons with other departments.
- Plan, lead, or conduct experiments/tests to evaluate operating characteristics of breadboards, prototypes, products, or processes. Translate experimental results into design criteria.
- Develop requirements, specifications, schematics, simulations (where applicable), assembly drawings, bills of material, and material cost estimates. Integrate electrical and electronic components. Specify the design of cables and cable harness assemblies. Utilize electronic design tools such as schematic capture and PCB layout to design PCBAs. Work with service bureaus and suppliers on PCB layout, fabrication, assembly, and other design/test activities. Determine appropriate components, materials, and processes for specific applications. Develop FPGAs and PLDs, using HDL.
- Conduct computer simulations to analyze and test designs.
- Ensure component reliability based on technical evaluation of suppliers specifications, designs, and manufacturing processes.
- Develop reliability models for electrical, electronic, electromechanical, and electro-optical sub-assemblies and assemblies.
- Review and implement Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM) and Design-for-Test (DFT) objectives.
- Evaluate, analyze, and review designs to assure technical soundness. Review and approve completed design work.
- Prepare technical documents and reports. Prepare system, sub-system, and module performance specifications. Prepare engineering specifications for major component purchases. Design and evaluate engineering breadboards and prototypes, and translate experimental results into design criteria.
- Ensure that sound engineering principles are applied.
- Assist manufacturing in the transition from development into production. Provide technical support as required during manufacturing, for example by resolving design related issues or by identifying replacement or substitute components. Specify phases of tests, investigation, or analysis. Write or direct the writing of ECOs.
- Prepare reports of and write technical instructions for field tests or installations as required.
- Assist in troubleshooting customer application problems. Provide application engineering support to customers.
- Conduct field testing and research new applications as required.
- Contribute to engineering project planning and tracking. Plan specific tasks for new projects. Estimate effort for and duration of specific tasks on a program. Assist in preparing cost estimates on proposed design projects. Evaluate project feasibility and risks.
- Responsible for successful completion (schedule, performance, and cost) of tasks and designs, and for communicating team status, schedule challenges, and resource needs to the program manager and functional manager.
- Utilize project planning and monitoring methods to ensure timely completion, and communicate project status to appropriate departments.
- Prepare project proposals detailing engineering work costs and timetable.
- Prepare technical proposals for competitive bids, including performance and cost research.
- Collect and analyze information on competing product performance.
- Provide technical presentation support and consultation to marketing.
- Recommend the addition, expansion, or termination of projects, and assure the technical soundness of engineering programs.
- On a project or on-going basis, provide technical direction to other engineering personnel.
- Assist in developing engineering budgets.
- Recommend and implement new design and analysis tools.
- Provide training to department for design and analysis methods and new tool usage.
- Define new processes and process improvements.
- A Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering with 12+ years of experience in electrical engineering and electronic design and development, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of a Bachelors degree in engineering or related discipline is required.
- Intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering theories, concepts, principles, practices, and processes, including in one or more areas of advanced technical expertise, and creativity and originality sufficient to contribute new inventions, designs, or techniques which are of material significance in the solution of important problems.
- Technical leadership experience. Leading a project team may be required.
- Digital and analog circuit design experience.
- Schematic and PCB design experience.
- Electrical system integration experience.
- Design experience including FPGA and VDHL is preferred.
- Experience with medical devices and/or laboratory automation products is preferred.
- Electromechanical systems experience, including stepper and servo motors, is preferred.
- Must be able to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Must be self-motivated.
- Must have good communication skills.

Job Description
In this role, you will be responsible for leading the specification, architecture, and design of electrical and electronic hardware for complex medical instruments in a multi-disciplinary environment. You will have the opportunity to work on a diverse set of product development efforts.
This is a highly advanced level and/or lead position which requires the regular application of acknowledged expertise in the electrical engineering field and the use of considerable initiative and creativity. The incumbent provides significant technical leadership in design and development projects, and in the preparation of technical proposals. Project leadership for large technical proposals and programs requires substantial coordination with internal resources and customer sources of information, oversight of the work of other engineers, and may involve representing the company where a high level of technical credibility is required.
