Special Education Teacher - Houston - Therapeutic Services, A Member of the Point Quest Group

    Primary Purpose

    Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop and implement individualized plans for specially designed instruction to help students build competencies and skills that maximize independence, economic self-sufficiency, and full participation in society.



    Qualifications

    Education/Certification

    • Valid Texas certification appropriate for assignment as required by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)

    • ESL certification preferred or required within two (2) years of employment (for teachers hired beginning with the 2010–2011 school year)

    • Meet NCLB Highly Qualified requirements as applicable to the assignment

    Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and subject matter for the assigned position

    • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior effectively

    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

    • Knowledge of specially designed instruction to address disability-related learning needs

    • Proficiency with digital tools including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ARD/IEP software, and learning management systems

    Experience

    • Experience working directly with individuals with disabilities preferred

    • Experience working with challenging behaviors preferred



    Major Responsibilities and Duties

    • Serve a diverse population of students, including those participating in state and federal programs and general education

    • Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with students, parents, colleagues, and community members

    • Maintain professional standards of conduct in alignment with district expectations

    • Maintain acceptable attendance (94% annually, excluding approved leave and emergencies)

    • Participate in required meetings and maintain appropriate documentation for IEP development, reviews, progress monitoring, grades, conferences, and related services

    • Comply with state and federal laws, district policies, and administrative guidelines



    Instructional Strategies

    • Plan and implement instruction aligned with Texas Education Agency (TEA) requirements, district curriculum, and each student's IEP

    • Develop lesson plans using appropriate strategies, materials, technology, and accommodations based on student learning needs

    • Implement instructional and linguistic accommodations as determined by ARD and LPAC committees

    • Collaborate with general education teachers to support students according to IEP requirements

    • Determine instructional goals and specially designed instruction based on individual student needs

    • Monitor student progress, maintain records, and provide timely feedback

    • Administer state assessments as appropriate



    Classroom Management and Organization

    • Create a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment

    • Implement behavior management aligned with intervention plans and district policies

    • Follow the Student Code of Conduct and campus expectations

    • Take reasonable precautions to ensure student and facility safety

    • Assist with selecting instructional materials and equipment

    • Maintain required reports, records, and documentation



    Professional Growth and Development

    • Participate in professional development to improve job-related skills

    • Comply with all applicable laws, policies, and regulations

    • Attend faculty meetings and serve on committees as required



    Other Duties

    • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures

    • Maintain appropriate technology proficiency

    • Implement alternative instructional methods when needed

    • Perform other duties as assigned



    Supervisory Responsibilities
    None



    Evaluation
    Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS).



    Mental and Physical Demands

    Standard office equipment use; prolonged sitting or standing; occasional bending, lifting (up to 30 pounds, occasionally up to 60 pounds), and physical intervention in emergency situations after appropriate training. Work may involve frequent interruptions and maintaining emotional control under stress.
