    Meskwaki Settlement School

    Job Title: Middle and High School Principal

    Reports to: Superintendent

    Qualifications

    • Possesses or is able to obtain a professional administrator license for the state of Iowa, with 5-12 Principal endorsement (170) and Evaluator endorsement (190)
    • Master's degree
    • At least three years of successful teaching experience
    • Native American preference
    • Experience in school administration is preferred
    • Experience with BIE/Tribal Grant School preferred
    • Must pass the background check per Public Law , Public Law , and the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act
    • Must possess a valid driver's license
    • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen

    Essential Duties

    • Carries out the Iowa Standards for School Leaders
    • Ensures clear and measurable goals are established, focused, and monitored to improve overall student achievement
    • Provides instructional leadership within the school setting
    • Leads the school learning organization by creating a collaborative culture of continuous improvement
    • Provides a clear vision for how instruction should be carried out in the school setting
    • Leads, supports, and delegates the 6-12 leadership team in a comprehensive approach to accomplish school goals
    • Leads, supports, and fosters a professional learning community which emphasizes collective efficacy of teachers and the review of student performance data
    • Incorporates ethical principles in all decision-making processes and treats all members of the school community with fairness, equity, dignity, and respect
    • Effectively communicates and uses consensus building and conflict resolution techniques and problem-solving skills
    • Collaborates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school improvement plan
    • Ensures that teachers are provided with clear, ongoing evaluations of their pedagogical strengths and weaknesses that are based on multiple sources of data and are consistent with a professional growth model
    • Positively impacts the performance of building employees through effective mentoring, supervision, and evaluation
    • Establishes and conveys high expectations for self, colleagues, and students
    • Oversees the development of the 6-12 master schedule
    • Collaborates with the Farm-to-School (F2S) Coordinator to plan and implement the F2S program
    • Assists with the scheduling of substitute teachers and TAs
    • Responsible for the administration, evaluation, and improvement of student discipline. Handles referrals of students sent to the office for reasons of behavior, attendance, or other concerns
    • Manages the allocation of resources in a manner that provides equitable learning opportunities for all students
    • Prepares and supervises the preparation of reports, records, tests, and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school's administration
    • Works with appropriate personnel in the effective and efficient operation of the school plant, food service, transportation, and accounting functions
    • Recruits, interviews, recommends for hire, and evaluates highly qualified faculty and staff; works with appropriate district administrators in the selection and assignment of building personnel
    • Maintains a safe learning and working environment and responds to emergencies according to protocol
    • Oversees the planning and supervision of student extracurricular, co-curricular, interscholastic, and social activities
    • Participates in administrative team meetings, student assistance team meetings, student IEP meetings, Gifted & Talented meetings, meetings with parents, and other such meetings
    • Maintains current knowledge of developments and best practices in the field of education
    • Collaborates with community agencies, and tribal entities such as Workforce Development, Youth Services, etc.
    • Carries out the role of superintendent designee when so assigned
    • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

    Essential Skills and Aptitudes

    • Provides active communication and positive relationships with all stakeholders including students, parents, staff, administration and community members
    • Represents the school in a professional manner through confidentiality, collegiality, and the ability to inspire and influence others
    • Skills and disposition to design a positive school culture and orchestrate a safe, orderly, caring community for learning
    • Capacity to lead staff development planning and implementation to accomplish goals and objectives identified through the school improvement planning process
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and related communication skills, including proofreading, editing and creating original documents
    • Able to work with various software programs, including student information systems such as Infinite Campus (NASIS)
    • Ability to work independently without supervision and as a team member
    • Ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions, problem solve independently and with others, and take initiatives
    • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis with the willingness to adjust to flexible work schedules
    • Ability to organize, prioritize, and assume responsibility and be accountable for decisions

    Physical Demands

The employee frequently must squat, stoop, or kneel, reach above the head and forward inches and on occasion up to 36 inches. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing duties of this job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 points 0 -12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as office materials, desks, chairs, and boxes. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.Work Environment

The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that will require the employee to arrive and leave as directed and may require the employee to extend beyond the typical 8:00 to 4:00 workday.
