    JOB SUMMARY


    Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance / Controller is responsible for the oversight of SPCO's accounting, financial reporting and internal control and compliance activities.

    The Director of Finance supports the Chief Financial Officer by coordinating all Finance and Investment Committee meetings and providing financial statements and other information for presentation to the Board of Directors and senior management.

    The Director of Finance directs and ensures timely completion of the annual audited financial statements and audit, IRS Form 990 and other tax filings.

    The Director of Finance is responsible for the delivery of complete, accurate financial reports to the organization and other interested parties.

    The Director of Finance plans, organizes and controls the monthly financial close process, including the daily activities of general ledger accounting, fund accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll accounting and tax reporting.

    The Director of Finance facilitates continuous improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of operations and maintains adequate internal controls for the safeguarding of SPCO's assets.

    The Director of Finance conducts research, provides financial accounting guidance to the broader organization, and manages and develops supporting staff.


    PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Primary Functions and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Accounting/Financial Reporting
    Prepares monthly, quarterly and yearly financial statements in accordance with GAAP.

    Oversees processes relevant to monthly financial close including accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash reconciliation, fund and investment accounting and general ledger account reconciliations; coordinates close procedures with Development and Ticketing departments.

    Prepares monthly statements of activities, financial position and cash flow statements, along with analyses in a timely manner for all constituents (internal management, Board of Directors, bank, auditors, grantors and regulatory authorities).

    Reviews journal entries and general ledger account reconciliations for accuracy, reasonableness and consistency with financial accounting standards/practices; prepares documentation for review and approval by Chief Financial Officer.

    Maintains Finance Calendar for monthly financial close deadlines, Board Committee meetings and other key dates and coordinates with relevant parties such that deadlines are met.

    Manages the activities of Accounts Payable, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, employee expense reports and cash control.

    Manages the activities of Accounts Receivable to ensure the accurate and timely management of all Accounts Receivable aging components, including billings, collections, cash receipt application, deferrals, etc.

    Oversees payroll and benefits accounting; coordinates processes with Human Resources and outsourced service provider.
    Prepares analyses of reported accounting data and clearly documents and/or communicates variances or changes, as requested.
    Creates new reports and updates standard reports on accounting system and dashboards to enable efficient distribution of financial information.

    Tax and Regulatory Compliance

    Manages accounting for federal and state tax filings, including Forms 941, 990, W2, 1099, state unemployment tax, sales and use tax, and unrelated business income tax.

    Provides information and manages preparation of state charities filings for Minnesota, Wisconsin and California by accounting firm.
    Ensures timely filing of tax documents or other financially-based regulatory forms or reports.

    Internal Control/Audits
    Organizes annual audit process; prepares annual financial report for audit.

    Coordinates field work with external auditors and tax authorities and serves as primary company liaison to respond to information requests.

    Conducts or coordinates internal audits of the organization's accounts and financial transactions to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements and statutes.

    Manages completion of annual workers compensation audit.
    Implements, manages and monitors internal controls and control procedures to adequately safeguard company assets.

    Maintains specific accounting policies, procedures and forms; instructs Departments and other users on financial procedures, reports and sources of financial information.

    Oversees general ledger maintenance for all funds (operating, temporarily restricted and permanent), chart of accounts, financial applications and reporting tools.

    Ensures financial reporting systems are working properly to automate the internal controls needed to deliver timely, accurate and complete financial information.

    Cash/Financial Management
    Reviews and approves general ledger account code classifications for daily cash transaction and reconciliation activity.
    Prepares monthly cash reconciliations.
    Assists in the review and administration of all financing arrangements such as instrument loans, property and equipment leases.
    Coordinates processes for the collection of receivables on pledges and use of SPCO property.
    Prepares reports for bank line of credit as needed.

    Gift/Grant Accounting Systems and Transactions
    Supports grant application preparation, project budgets, interim and final reports.
    Provides project tracking and conducts analyses for grants and gifts designated for a specific purpose.
    Conducts accounting research and provides guidance for use in correspondence for ensuring gifts and grants are properly accounted for.
    Prepares detailed documentation for Minnesota State Arts Board funding and other grants as required.

    Financial Planning and Analysis
    Provides support to Chief Financial Officer in the annual budget and quarterly forecasting processes.
    Prepares budgets and forecasts for restricted funding releases, depreciation and other areas as needed.
    Responds to information requests and performs ad hoc queries.
    Researches and reports variances to budgets.
    Prepares financial analyses as requested to facilitate business decision making.
    Works with departmental and senior managers to gather information, gain understanding of business needs/issues and conduct research if needed.
    Updates budgeting and forecast models, gathers information and uploads and checks data in accounting system.

    Management/Other
    Supervises accounting manager and accounting associate. Evaluates performance and provides development opportunities of direct reports. Establishes and monitors business goals, operational metrics and quality objectives.
    Attends management meetings, training and continuing professional education sessions as needed or required.
    Prepares survey data, including League of American Orchestra and US Census surveys.
    Oversees company financial records retention process.
    Performs other duties as required or assigned.

    MINIMUM SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
    Required Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA license (active preferred).
    Minimum of seven years of relevant, progressive, overall accounting experience.
    Minimum of three years supervisory experience.
    Strong, hands-on knowledge of a state-of-the-art accounting system; advanced level of Excel.

    Desired Qualifications
    Experience in a not-for-profit with an operating budget of approximately $10 million.
    Experience in a non-profit arts organization and understanding of non-profit accounting principles.
    Experience with unions and collective bargaining agreements.
    Experience with Sage Intacct.
    Experience with AudienceView or other ticketing systems.
    Experience implementing financial systems and integrating external applications.
    Intermediate Word and Powerpoint skills.
    Experience with major payroll processor (e.g., Paylocity)

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    Self-starter; able to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-changing, dynamic and complex business environment.
    Ability to perform at both managerial and tactical levels, as needed, to minimize backlog.
    Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including communication with senior management and Board of Directors.

    Current on applicable financial reporting standards and proficient in the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

    Must be a resident of the state of Minnesota or be willing to relocate upon starting employment.

    Must have ability to pass a criminal background check.
