    Preferred Qualifications: PhD degree in Data Science, Bioinformatics, or related field; knowledge in epidemiology and biostatistics, evolutionary biology and systematics, statistical modeling, molecular virology, genomics, and metagenomics; demonstrated experience state-of-the-art techniques of machine learning and deep learning in biomedicine, with experience in applications to infectious disease (current projects include HIV, Influenza A virus, SARS-CoV-2 and RSV).

    Position Summary
    The Research Professional position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research projects within the Center for Applied Pathogen Genomic Epidemiology and Outbreak Response (CAPE) at the University of Georgia. As a vital member of our interdisciplinary team, you will play a key role in advancing our understanding of molecular epidemiology and phylodynamics of RNA viruses through the use of machine and deep learning. New initiatives include protein modeling, epidemic forecasting, and vaccine design.

    With generous funding from organizations such as the NIH, CDC, and NSF, you will have the opportunity to contribute to high-impact projects, collaborate with leading experts in the field, and make meaningful contributions to public health and scientific knowledge.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
    • Expertise in biomedical data analysis and data visualization
    • Proficiency in state-of-the-art techniques of machine learning and deep learning
    • Demonstrated experience in bioinformatics, genomics, and metagenomics
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary research teams
    • Experience in mentoring graduate students

    Independently design and conduct research in line with the mission of the Bahl lab, analyze data, and disseminate findings through publications and presentations.

    Ensure research quality and integrity are met in all datasets; Utilize expertise in computational biology, machine learning, and bioinformatics to develop and optimize algorithms and models for the analysis of high-dimensional biological data; Identify and create novel ML techniques and the required data to train predictive/forecasting models.

    Provide mentorship and developmental support to junior trainees; Collaborate closely with researchers and scientists within the lab to design and implement computational strategies to address complex biological questions.
