    Cherry Hospital, an accredited State Psychiatric Hospital serving the eastern region of North Carolina, is accepting applications for a Creative/Expressive Arts Therapist position.

    This position will provide Creative and Expressive Arts Services for the patients throughout the hospital.

    Duties include planning and implementing active treatment groups, documentation of patients' response to treatment, conducting Rehabilitation Services assessments, Creative/Expressive Arts evaluations upon referral and assisting treatment teams in developing individualized treatment plans.

    This position may also provide Creative/Expressive Arts activities and/or assist with other special activities as scheduled, may include evenings and weekends.

    Work hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and evenings/ weekends/holidays as scheduled.

    Qualified applicants must document on the application that they possess all of the following:


    • Working knowledge of the physiological, sociological, and psychological implications for the disease processes experienced by the population being served.
    • Considerable knowledge of the therapeutic creative/expressive arts principles, techniques, and methods and their application to the population being served. Ability to integrate a philosophy of creative/expressive arts which is therapeutic in nature into a clinical program.
    • Ability to select and administer a variety of appropriate testing methods and use the results to plan individualized therapeutic programs.
    • Ability to evaluate client progress and to present evaluative reports in interdisciplinary team meetings.
    • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with clients, families, a variety of professional disciplines, and the general public.

    Management Preferences:
    Experience with inpatient psychiatric setting preferred.


    Previous work experience demonstrating the ability to instruct and supervise student interns and other medical and paraprofessional personnel in creative/expressive arts therapy methods and techniques.


    Education and experience in one of the following modalities: Art therapy, Dance/Movement therapy, Drama therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, and/or Music Therapy.


    A candidate that possesses one of the following:
    Board certified music therapist through CBMT (Certification Board for Music Therapists) with the MT-BC credential.

    Registration with ATCB (Art Therapy Credentialing Board) as an ATR-P, ATR, or ATR-BC

    Registration with DMTCB (Dance Movement Therapy Certification Board) as a R-DMT or BC-DMT.

    Registration with NADTA (North American Drama Therapy Association) as a RDT.


    Registration with IEATA (International Expressive Arts Therapy Association) as a REAT or holds an EXA certificate and working toward registration.

    Bachelors degree in music therapy which includes a six month internship from an appropriately accredited institution;

    or Bachelors degree in music or music education with an equivalency in music therapy which includes a six month internship from an appropriately accredited institution;


    or Bachelor s degree in one of the creative/expressive arts areas (art, dance, drama, music) from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in all phases of therapeutic programming; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


    Administering the class:
    if the creative/expressive arts degree program has a therapeutic equivalency or emphasis, the experience requirements will be waived.

    Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.
