    Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
    • To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the opencompetitive minimum qualifications for this position.

    The qualifications are:

    Promotional:

    Have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Office Assistant 1 (Stores/Mail) or a Stores Clerk 1.

    Only the title(s) listed is qualifying for this examination(s)

    Open Competitive:
    Either 1.

    two years of experience directly involved in ordering, issuing, and stocking a wide variety of auto, truck, agricultural, industrial, military, and/or construction equipment parts in a dealership, parts distribution center, or major parts store with computerized control of the parts operation;Or 2.

    two years of experience as an automotive or heavy equipment mechanic, shop supervisor or superintendent, directly repairing or overseeing a broad diversity of repair work on automotive or heavy equipment, and/or trucks in a facility having a minimum of 50 repairs per week.

    Repairs must vary and must include transmissions, engines, electrical and hydraulic systems, differentials, etc.
    Or 3.

    30 semester credit hours of college course work in a program leading to a degree in automotive technology, diesel technology, automotive repair technology, or diesel repair technology AND one year of experience in Either 1, OR 2 above.


    Examples of Non-Qualifying Experience:

    Experience in a repair shop limited to motorcycles, motor boats, small engines or repetitive work such as brakes, transmissions, tires, oil and lubrication services, or exhaust systems will not be considered as qualifying.

    Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

    Duties Description A Stores Clerk 2 (Motor Equipment) performs a variety of administrative office tasks.

    These duties include, but are not limited to, the following:


    • Ordering parts and supplies in accordance with contractual and open market purchasing regulations.
    • Assisting in monitoring adherence to purchasing practices, vendor performance, contractcompliance and quality assurance of products received; using computers, microfiche and parts books to obtain and cross reference part numbers.
    • Record purchases, issues and consumption of parts, assuring that all issues are properly charged.
    • Receive and/or supervise the receipt and storage of parts and supplies.
    • Maintain inventory levels; conduct physical inventories.
    • Follow up with vendors regarding delivery problems
    • Assist in maintaining security and orderliness of parts storage areas.
    • Delivering parts to field location.
    Training and use of forklifts will be required. One person lifting of parts, equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds is also required.

    Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

    Additional Comments *For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non- competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

    At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments.

    In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.

    At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination.

    Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.

    While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
