JOB DESCRIPTION
Our manufacturing client in Salt Lake City is looking to hire an experienced Maintenance Controls Technician to support a large, modern manufacturing operation.
This role is the technical escalation point for PLCs, electrical systems, automation, and advanced diagnostics. It is not a mechanical-only maintenance role.You will work alongside an established maintenance team, diagnosing complex system failures, restoring uptime, and helping improve long-term equipment reliability.
Key Responsibilities- Troubleshoot PLC-controlled production equipment
- Go online with PLCs to diagnose faults, monitor logic, and trace I/O
- Diagnose and resolve issues involving: o PLC logic, safety circuits, and interlocks o Sensors (photo eyes, prox switches, encoders) o VFDs, servos, motor starters, and actuators
Read and interpret:
o Electrical schematics o Ladder logic o HMI alarms and fault messages
- Troubleshoot cutting, welding, glazing, material handling, and automated assembly equipment
- Back up PLC and HMI programs and maintain basic documentation
- Support and mentor maintenance technicians on electrical and controls troubleshooting
- Work safely in 24VDC–480VAC industrial environments
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Ability to work onsite Mon-Fri 5:45 AM 2:15 PM
- Proven hands on experience troubleshooting PLC controlled industrial equipment
Ability to:
o Go online with a PLC o Monitor live logic o Trace inputs/outputs from field devices to logic and outputs
- Strong industrial electrical background (controls-focused)
- Experience using diagnostic tools (multimeter, laptop, PLC software)
- Manufacturing environment experience (automation-heavy preferred)
NICE TO HAVE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Preferred Experience
- Allen-Bradley PLCs, Lenze, Beckoff, Yaskawa drives
- HMI troubleshooting (PanelView or similar)
- VFD setup and fault diagnostics
- Industrial networking basics (Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Profinet)
- Experience with OEM window, extrusion, or high-speed manufacturing equipment
- Ability and willingness to train and mentor others
