    Overview of Summer Programs

    Horizons at New Canaan Country School


    Founded in 1964, Horizons at New Canaan Country School provides long-term educational and enrichment support to underserved students primarily from Stamford and Norwalk public schools.

    Horizons programs and services are designed to eliminate the significant achievement and opportunity gap experienced by these students and put them on track for success in college and career.

    The six-week summer enrichment program (June 2- August 2) is a core component of our programming and serves 300 students from Kindergarten through 9th grade.

    Over the summer, students improve their academics, participate in music, art and sports, learn to swim, and participate in special events and field trips.

    Students come back year after year and build trusting, lasting relationships with the caring adults who work in the program.


    Summer@ Country School

    School offers a safe, self-contained environment perfect for campers to freely explore and enjoy their favorite activities with friends old and new.

    We offer a range of traditional and new activities that make each summer unique, including art, STEM and athletics, 85-acres of outdoor and woodland adventure, and weekly specials.

    Through hands-on experiences and a combination of guided and independent experiences, campers are encouraged to try new things, explore, accept challenges, and most of all have fun.

    Our program operates from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. School is open to both current NCCS families, as well as those families outside the community.


    Job Summary

    The summer programs nurse oversees the health and safety of program participants and staff by operating the Health Center, administering medications, treating illness and injuries, and acting as a liaison to parents, camp staff, and health providers.

    Processing all medications and supplies related to all off-site programs such as trips, treks, and all-day adventures.

    This is a 9-week position (June 1- August 16) 8 am - 3:30 pm position with generous compensation and daily meals.

    Job sharing is a possibility. Please indicate weeks available when applying.


    Responsibilities

    Below is a summary of the main responsibilities of the role:


    • Review health forms of all students to become familiar with any health needs and challenges. Follow-up with parents/guardians for clarification and additional information when necessary.
    • Inform lead teachers of any allergies or health challenges/needs of students in their class before the first day of the program. Ensure that lead teachers understand how to protect the health and safety of children in their care.
    • Organize and manage dispensing of student medications.
    • Treat and triage staff and student injuries and illness. Inform parents/guardians of incidents and get appropriate approvals. Complete medical incident reports.
    • Ensure teachers and chaperones are appropriately informed and equipped to meet student needs on field trips and camping trips.

    Logistics and Day-to-Day Management


    • Come dressed and prepared to be where students may need medical assistance: sports fields, pool, etc.
    • Contribute to creating a safe and nurturing environment.

    Summer Wrap Up


    • Work with Horizons Office and Junior, Senior Program Directors, and School Directors to ensure that medications and first aid equipment have been accounted for and returned.
    • Ensure that all reports have been completed and submitted.
    • Document any issues/problems.
    • Debrief with the Executive Director of Horizons and School Directors to offer recommendations for future summer planning.
    Requirements

    The ideal applicant will demonstrate the following:


    • RN degree and CT license.
    • Prior experience as a school or camp nurse/health provider preferred.
    • Expertise with CT health laws as they relate to student health.
    • Ability to create and maintain positive and supportive relationships with faculty and students.
    • Ability to calmly and effectively handle medical emergencies.
