    Post-doctoral Research Associate – Ecology & Evolutionary Biology

    Description: The Hemingway Lab is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our laboratory as a Postdoctoral Researcher. As a member of our team, the postdoc will conduct field- and lab-based behavioral research experiments on bees. The postdoc will play a crucial role in conducting and publishing rigorous experiments studying pollinator foraging cognition. The role requires a significant and full-time commitment to research and scholarship. The postdoc will also assist the PI with mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. Work schedule may require weekend availability and early morning hours depending on the month of the year.


    Qualifications

    Duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

    • Perform behavioral experiments to support new and ongoing research projects
    • Analyze and plot experimental results
    • Write and publish scientific manuscripts
    • Maintain live animal populations for research experiments
    • Supervise, train, and mentor graduate and undergraduate student researchers

    Techniques used in the lab include:

    • Behavioral ecology: Performing behavioral experiments on captive bee colonies, including operant conditioning, reversal learning, foraging preference tests, etc.
    • Field ecology: Conducting behavioral experiments on bees in the wild, including catching and tagging wild bees
    • Animal care: Maintain and clean colony enclosures and foraging arenas, ensure a safe and secure habitat, and monitor health of animals.
    • Use of spectrometers and gas chromatography

    Training will be provided for the necessary laboratory and field techniques. Previous experiences and familiarity with these techniques is encouraged.

    Qualifications

    • PhD in integrative biology, zoology, ecology and evolutionary biology, or related field
    • Experience in animal behavior research is required
    • Problem-solving, strong attention to detail, and high levels of organization are required
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
    • Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently and as part of a team is required
    • Proficiency with computer software (e.g., R, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Photoshop) is required
