    Summary



    This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

    The registered nurse (staff nurse) is directly responsible to the designated manager in the assigned critical care area; the registered nurse, provides an environment for the delivery of care to clinically complicated and severely ill patients with acute and potentially life threatening, general medical, surgical and disease carrying multi-system failure in the adult population. They are responsible for assuring continuity of care for Critical Care patients implementing applicable disease management protocols as appropriate.

    The registered nurse possesses basic knowledge and skills to apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and attainment of optimal levels of functioning and/or support of the dying patient and significant others. Interdisciplinary plans of care are developed, implemented, reviewed and revised as necessary. Nursing responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient nursing care.
    • Initiate treatments, administer critical medications and monitors effects and patient progress.
    • Assists the critical care physician with procedures.
    • Identify sudden or subtle changes in a patient's medical condition.
    • Collaborate with ICU team and other health care professionals.
    • Respond to Rapid Response and Code Blue calls.
    • Deliver regular updates to doctors, patients, and their family members.
    • Operate technological equipment utilized on the unit.
    • Maintain complete and accurate computerized patient records.
    • Act as patient advocate.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Role responsibilities and accountabilities also include demonstration of knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of patients served in the assigned area of practice. This knowledge includes understanding changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric population.

    Pay Scale: NP96

    Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards

    Paid Time Off: 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

    Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

    Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

    Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
