GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The primary responsibility of a PER DIEM CHAPLAIN is to provide evidence-based spiritual care to patients and their loved ones including spiritual assessment, interventions, and monitoring of outcomes as a fully integrated member of the interdisciplinary care team.
PER DIEM CHAPLAINs are involved in all aspects of care including but not limited to team meetings, family meetings and goals of care discussions.
PER DIEM CHAPLAINs are charged with developing and leading unit-wide and hospital-wide faith-specific and interfaith services.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
§ Assessment:
The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN gathers and evaluates relevant data pertinent to the situation and/or bio-psycho-social-spiritual/religious health of the patient and/or family member.
§ Delivery of Care:The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN develops and implements a plan of care to promote the well-being and continuity of care of the patient and/or family member.
§ Documentation of Care:The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN enters information into the patient's medical record that is relevant to the patient's medical, psychosocial, and spiritual/religious goals of care.
§ Teamwork and Collaboration:The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN collaborates with interdisciplinary teams of care, focusing on patients and family members. The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN performs other duties as required, assigned, or negotiated.
§ Ethical Practice:
The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN adheres to the Common Code of Ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains and the code of ethics of the MGH organization.
§ Confidentiality:The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN respects the confidentiality of information from all sources, including the patient, medical record, other team members, and family members in accordance with federal and state laws, and the policies of the organization.
§ Respect for Diversity:The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN models and collaborates with the organization and its interdisciplinary team in respecting and providing culturally sensitive and competent patient-centered care.
§ Care for Staff:The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN provides timely and sensitive spiritual care to the organization's staff via individual and group interaction as negotiated with Director.
§ Continuous Quality Improvement:The PER DIEM CHAPLAIN seeks and creates opportunities to enhance the quality of the spiritual care practice. This includes performing other duties as required, assigned, or negotiated.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Professional:
§ Clarity of pastoral identity and role in a nonsectarian institutional setting
§ Knowledgeable about ministry to persons of diverse religious, cultural, racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
§ Excellent interpersonal skills
§ Ability to work well as a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team
§ Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
§ Ability to relate theology, behavioral science, and understanding of persons to help minister to patients/families in their struggles
§ Good organizational skills

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS
Certified or in the process of certification by APC, NACC, or NAJC preferred.
Endorsement for hospital from the ecclesiastical or religious body to which he/she belongs preferred
EDUCATION:
A Master's degree or equivalent is required. One or more CPE units required, 4 or more CPE units preferred.
Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training:
Ministry Studies; Master's of Divinity or Master's of Theology preferred
§ It is possible for a commitment to be negotiated with the Director of Spiritual Care & Education to engage in CPE during employment and/or to complete an appropriate Master's Degree.
EXPERIENCE:
§ At least one year's experience in hospital spiritual care; preferably in a large teaching hospital
