    Description

    Do you have a passion for outdoor recreation and a knack for teaching others? Join Cary's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources team as an Outdoor Education Instructor to share your enthusiasm for the outdoors with the wider community Ideal candidates have leadership experience working with youth in outdoor settings, can lead a variety of technical outdoor skills, and share our passion for experiential education.

    This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, working up to 20 hours per week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.
    Typical Tasks
    • Assists the outdoor education program team with development, preparation and facilitation of outdoor education programs and events;
    • Engages groups in an effective way that demonstrates positive group management;
    • Communicates with staff, teachers, students, and parents in a professional manner;
    • Gathers and prepares materials and equipment for classes;
    • Sets up and takes down designated spaces;
    • Provides group management during lessons for camps and programs;
    • Teaches skills and concepts to individuals with varying comfort levels and previous experience;
    • Maintains a safe and supportive learning environment;
    • Maintains a positive relationship with park partners;
    • Performs other job-related tasks as required.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge to teach some or all of the following: leadership development, teambuilding, ropes course, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, environmental education, nature activities, hiking, orienteering, archery, fishing, spear throwing, fire building, and survival skills; knowledge of outdoor education; knowledge of equipment and supplies required for content areas; general knowledge of computers and related software; strong communication and interpersonal skills; organizational skills; skill in the operation of common office equipment; ability to work in a dynamic environment; group management skills to engage all participants; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to exercise judgment in controlling the activities, behavior, and safety of participants; ability to collaborate with other team members.

    Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

    Requires at least one year or one summer season working as an instructor, guide, educator, or counselor in an outdoor education, camp, or nature center program. Two or more years preferred.

    Prefers a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in recreation management, experiential education, environmental education, elementary/middle/high school education, or closely related field.

    Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
