    Full Salary Range:
    The full salary range for this position is $82,300 to $151,700/year.

    Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

    Department Marketing Statement:

    Brief Summary of Job Duties:


    The Associate Director of Development, Social Sciences, reports to the Interim Assistant Dean of Development for the Division of Social Sciences and works to identify and cultivate relationships to optimize philanthropic support to benefit UC Santa Barbara and the Division of Social Sciences.

    Primary emphasis is on the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual prospects (alumni, parents and friends) and when appropriate, foundations and corporations.

    Focus will be on organizing donor outreach, including frequent travel for face-to-face meetings, to secure new and renew annual gifts ($1,000+), with an added emphasis on building and maintaining an active pipeline of $1,000 - $24,999 gifts.

    Tasks include managing the annual giving program, creating donor appeals, developing online and social media giving strategies, as well as helping to identify, cultivate and lay the groundwork for major gift conversations of $25,000 and above.

    With regard to major gift prospects, the Associate Director, in coordination with and guidance from the Interim Assistant Dean of Development and other members of the Social Sciences development team, develops and executes individual prospect strategies to maximize philanthropic support.

    Focuses eighty percent (80%) of his/her time on direct fundraising, volunteer management, and fundraising outreach activities.

    Twenty percent (20%) is focused on administrative duties, such as planning, coordinating and follow up; partnering with departments on their alumni outreach strategies; and collaborating on strategic development events for donor cultivation and stewardship purposes.

    Builds and maintains an active prospect pipeline moving from an unqualified lead to donor.

    This development officer is a resource for the entire Division of Social Sciences, but may also have responsibility for particular initiatives and projects at the direction of the Interim Assistant Dean of Development.

    Travels as necessary to build the pipeline, raising annual and major gifts.

    Works to ensure that all aspects of his/her development program are internally consistent, thematically related, and thoroughly coordinated within the Division of Social Sciences and compatible with the policies and priorities of the Development Office and University.


    Required Qualifications:
    Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
    1-3 years Direct development experience or other relevant professional experience in higher education.
    1-3 years Proven success in fundraising, sales, or related business field.
    Demonstrated track record of managing professional relationships in business, preferably in a development environment.

    Persuasive verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to relate to and communicate with a wide array of constituents.

    Ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues, partners and the public.
    Ability to work independently, balance priorities, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
    Exceptional organizational skills and judgment necessary to manage multiple priorities and long-term projects.
    Proficiency with Microsoft Office and donor/customer relationship databases in order to search for new possible donors to the University.
    Flexibility and willingness to travel.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    1-3 years of experience working with donor database or CRM software (e.g. Advance, Raiser's Edge, Blackbaud, etc.).

    An understanding of building professional relationships and with training, the ability to articulate the programmatic objectives with clarity and passion.

    Highest ethical standards, demonstrated empathy and the ability to maintain a positive attitude when faced with challenging situations.

    Ability to assess and understand institutional needs and communicate the importance of the division and donor partnership in achieving the mission.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time:80% Fundraising

    • Identifies, optimizes and increases philanthropic support for the various departments, Centers, programs and initiatives of the Division of Social Sciences at UC Santa Barbara by qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding annual and major gift prospects and, when appropriate, foundations and corporations.
    • Primary focus will be on annual gifts, $1,000 $24,999, and laying the groundwork for major gift conversations of $25,000 and above. Manages the annual giving program including Give Day, appeals, renewals, and social media giving strategies.
    • Plays a key role in the management of the Division's volunteer boards and councils by assisting with the various gatherings, meetings, and engagement of volunteers.
    • Devotes significant effort to cultivating relationships that lead to solicitations, actively managing a portfolio of approximately 125 prospects.
    • Makes a minimum of 100 meaningful "moves" per year focused on prospects in discovery and under portfolio management. "Moves" may be defined as significant contacts or steps, executed in accordance with a strategy designed to result in a gift to UC Santa Barbara. Moves can include inperson visits, tailored telephone or Zoom conversations, correspondence, event cultivation, and other personal contact.
    • Travels to meet with annual and major gift prospects in and out of the Santa Barbara region (domestic travel only).
    • Attends various meetings and University events, including some on weekends and evenings, in order to identify, cultivate, solicit, or steward donors.
    20% Strategy Planning and Administration

    • Provides a wide range of cultivation and stewardship opportunities for prospects and donors by planning various events and campus visits in coordination with the Social Sciences development team.
    • Develops and implements an annual program plan which coordinates and forecasts all assigned development efforts including fundraising goals, metrics, stewardship, travel, solicitations and events calendar.
    • Drafts and creates necessary followup correspondence, donor proposals, and gift documentation generated from personal visits and solicitations.
    • Frequently updates the Advance database by documenting and submitting contact reports and strategy notes after every interaction with a prospect and donor that results in a significant move towards a philanthropic gift.
    • Reviews and monitors travel and entertainment expenditures.
    • Initiates donor acknowledgements and recognition, as appropriate, and works in partnership with the Donor Relations & Stewardship Coordinator.
    • Participates in various Development Office or other University committees and handles special assignments, as appropriate.
    • Serves as a team member of the University Development team and works collaboratively with Development colleagues across the campus to maximize donor relationships at UC Santa Barbara.
