    Description

    The Summer Director of the School of Hebrew is responsible for the planning and implementation of the following School of Hebrew programs: the 7-week and 3-week summer language programs and the year-round graduate programs. Responsibilities include supporting faculty in developing and implementing curriculum, supervising instructors' pedagogical approaches to ensure student progress, providing advice and support to students, faculty, and instructional staff. The SoH Co-Directors will work together in a number of areas, including but not limited to, hiring the School's summer faculty, preparing and executing the placement and exit exams, and program evaluations and development.

    Essential Functions: The Director spends the summer in residence on the Vermont campus where he/she oversees the instructional and co-curricular programs, as well as supervising all program faculty and generally teaches one organized course. During the academic year the Director plans the summer curriculum, helps to hire summer faculty and staff, evaluates and publicizes the program, and recruits students.

    Initial appointment is for three years. Directors submit an Annual Report in the fall of each year summarizing School performance for the summer, goals for the next year, and vision for the School.

    • contribution to achieving the goals of the Language Schools

    Responsibilities Specific to the Summer Programs:

    • Prepare instructors for the summer program in the following areas: creation of syllabi, curriculum development, student support, and expectations as School of Hebrew faculty members
    • Communicate with all faculty throughout the summer program to ensure that all course goals are being met and that all SoH curriculum is being implemented and student learning goals are achieved
    • Communicate all summer announcements to faculty and ensure they are carried out
    • Work with the SoH team to provide support to all students and ensure that their learning needs are met
    • Observe classes in all programs and provide feedback to instructors
    • Handle any confidential issues that arise during the summer program with professionalism and care

    Work with the SoH Co-Director in the following areas:

    • Evaluate and assess the SoH programs to ensure that its mission is being carried out and look for areas of future growth and development
    • The decision making process of hiring faculty and staff for all programs
    • Manage and supervise all School of Hebrew faculty during the academic year and the summer
    • Leading faculty and student orientation and weekly summer faculty meetings
    • Assess the needs of all School of Hebrew programs
    • Program decision-making
    • Evaluate the summer and academic year SoH faculty
    • Oversee the SoH placement exam and class placement process
    • Support teachers with creation of class syllabi for undergraduate programs
    • Program curriculum development for undergraduate programs
    • Instructor communication year-round
    • Teacher training initiatives
    • Collaborate with summer faculty to ensure that students are fully served and supported and that their needs are being met
    • Oversee the SoH exit exam process
    • Create and send exit exam reports to students

    General Responsibilities: Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    Qualifications

    Education: He/she should be a senior faculty member with tenure or tenurable credentials in an established program.

    Experience: Experience in language teaching and directing/coordinating a language program.

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

    • Background in second language acquisition pedagogy
    • Ability to make involved decisions about program direction and personnel
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work well within a team environment
