    Summary



    This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Eighth Coast Guard District, Marine Safety Unit Port Arthur, in Port Arthur, TX.



    Duties


    This position serves as both the Commercial Fishing Industry Vessel Examiner providing commercial fishing industry vessel examination services and as a senior technical expert regarding the local commercial fishing industry.

    Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

    • Conducting technical reviews to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards.
    • Determining that vessels to be examined have the proper documents and certificates on board and in effect.
    • Examining all required navigation, communication, alarm, lifesaving, firefighting, and pollution prevention systems to ensure that they are operating properly and in compliance with applicable standards.
    • Examining the vessels accessible hull, including hull envelope, internal structural members, protrusions, fittings, appendages, holding areas, special use structures, and structural fire protection to ensure that they are in sound condition.
    • Examining the vessels machinery, including propulsion equipment, control machinery, auxiliary machinery, special deck, derrick and vessel pumping equipment, damage and fire control machinery, electrical and power generation systems, piping, transfer and monitoring systems to ensure that they are in safe operating condition and are in compliance with applicable design, installation, and operational standards.
    • Drafting examination reports, analyses, and routine general correspondence related to fishing industry vessel examination and regulations.
    • This position requires significant physical effort.

    **The vessel examiner is required to climb vertical ladders, to enter confined spaces such as fish holds, double bottoms and engine rooms, to walk for prolonged periods in a stooped position and to work at a considerable height above the ground or sea on slippery decks.**
