    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    This is an independent, professional virologist position under the direction of the Medical Laboratory Scientist III -
    SES in the field of Retrovirology.

    This position spends more than 50% of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work.

    The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action.

    The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.

    The primary duties of this position are to motivate, train and evaluate employees while planning and directing this work.

    The incumbent of this position has the supervisory authority to assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or to recommend such action.

    A person in this position must be able to prioritize and make sound decisions.

    Coordinates and/or performs the necessary immunologic procedures for the detection of HIV antigens, antibodies, and RNA. These techniques include immunoassays, viral load, genotyping and CD4/CD8 testing.

    The incumbent must motivate employees to improve and maintain high quality and quantity of work performed. All tasks must conform to current protocols, rules, and regulations regarding safety and confidentiality. All state and federal laws that pertain to the employees must be adhered to.

    The incumbent must assure all HIV request is positively identified, follow appropriate algorithms and record demographic data. Patient results, as well as quality control on assays and instruments, must be verified.

    Serves as a retroviral consultant to other public health laboratories, as well as county public health units, private laboratories, clinics, and physicians.

    This entails having the knowledge and skill to communicate with other professionals in this complex field; therefore, this position requires the scientist to be well versed in immunology terminology, as well as being familiar with the various types of equipment.

    Performs other related duties.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing.

    Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis.

    Skill in the use of lab equipment.

    Ability to communicate effectively.

    Ability to work independently.

    Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

    Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    Minimum - Bachelors in Medical Technology or one of the Biological Sciences, Current Florida Clinical Laboratory Public Health, Medical Laboratory Technologist/ Technician license in Serology or Microbiology, or the ability to get the license within 90 days.

    Preferred - Masters Degree, 3 years experience.
