    About ECU Health North Hospital

    ECU Health North Hospital is a Joint Commission-accredited, 204-bed acute bed facility serving Halifax, Northampton and Warren counties in the north-central region of North Carolina. Its service area also reaches into southern Virginia. With more than 600 team members, the hospital offers a broad range of medical and surgical services. It features a 24-hour emergency department and offers advanced diagnostics as well as specialty and primary care.

    Position Summary

    The Education Nurse Specialist (ENS) is a registered professional nurse who provides safe, expedient, and cost-effective Clinical Education services to ensure quality patient outcomes. As a member of a team of Educators, the ENS assesses educational needs, plans programs to meet those needs, implements those programs, and evaluates the effectiveness of offerings for employees, students, volunteers, and diverse community members across the lifespan. Educational offerings provided will promote clinical reasoning and critical thinking, and will utilize best practices and current evidence (for both education and practice), and will be revised based on participant feedback, outcomes evaluation, and changes in best practice. Thorough documentation for all educational offerings, including content, objectives, evaluations, and attendance will be maintained. The ENS functions as a leader, consultant, innovator, coordinator, and change agent in the pursuit of exemplary professional nursing practice. He/she actively participates on or leads committees appropriate for his/her areas of emphasis, and is involved in the orientation and ongoing development of staff, Quality and Patient Safety Initiatives, Patient- and Family-Centered Care Initiatives, mandatory training, and electronic health record (EHR) support. The ENS behaves in a manner consistent with the standards and ethics of all health care professionals.

    Responsibilities

    Uses adult teaching/learning theories and strategies to facilitate initial and ongoing staff development.

    Analyzes the educational needs of the organization, its employees, and the community it serves.

    Collaborates with organizational leaders to develop and maintain a functional conceptual framework for staff development.

    Implements educational opportunities based on assessed needs that align with current standards of care and the scope of practice for the target audience, and are appropriate for the population participating (i.e., age, role, knowledge base, experience, etc.).

    Maintains thorough documentation of educational opportunities, including objectives, content outline, attendance records, and evaluations.

    Evaluates the effectiveness of educational offerings or programs provided utilizing evaluation methods most appropriate to gauge the desired outcomes, and uses evaluation data to make revisions or adjustments to offerings or programs as needed.

    Ensures compliance with accreditation, regulatory, hospital, and system requirements and recommendations for initial and ongoing staff competencies and professional development.

    Develops, implements, and evaluates comprehensive new employee orientation programs.

    Ensures that educational offerings are appropriate for the population participating
    Uses current evidence to support and advance clinical practice.

    Identifies opportunities within the organization to advance clinical practice using current evidence.

    Disseminates pertinent developments in the knowledge and evidence base of the profession, and current information theories in areas of specialization.

    Relies upon relevant, current evidence (for both practice and education) to support the advancement of nursing practice and promote staff development.

    Integrates relevant, current evidence (for both practice and education) into all learning activities.

    Meaningfully evaluates the impact of various learning activities on patient care, clinical outcomes, and advancement of nursing practice.
    Integrates quality improvement priorities in educational and/or staff development initiatives.

    Identifies and recommends educational initiatives that are congruent with Hospital and System quality improvement priorities.

    Implements a data-driven and evidence-based approach to the selection, planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational initiatives.

    Identifies opportunities for educational support to improve patient care delivery and outcomes.

    Role models the use of performance improvement principles and techniques.

    Identifies and reports quality issues through data sources.
    Consistently adheres to universal precautions and consistently performs proper hand hygiene according to Infection Control Policy.

    Maintains confidentiality of protected health information at all times.

    Uses department "scripts" to effectively communicate with other departments, patients, families, coworkers and students in person or over the phone.

    Consistently adheres to Safety Habits (i.e., Behavior-Based Expectations) in the provision of safe patient care.

    Demonstrates safe operation of all equipment in compliance with department policy, Infection Control standards, and quality control standards.

    Demonstrates effective computer skills for electronic charting, word processing, email usage, presentation development, literature searches, use of the Learning Management System, IT ticket requests, and other software-based tasks required by employment.

    Actively participates on Staff Action Team(s).

    Adheres to all departmental, hospital, and system policies and procedures.

    As directed by Supervisor, may have additional responsibilities, as appropriate.
    Maintains and advances knowledge and skills in area of specialization.

    Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide education to diverse individuals across the lifespan.

    Advances clinical expertise through in-service education, patient rounds, conference attendance, simulation activities, literature reviews, collaborative partnerships, and research activities.

    Participates in professional organizations.

    Obtains education contact hours necessary to maintain licensure.

    Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing growth and self-development by independently seeking learning opportunities through employment at ECU Health Duplin Hospital.

    Maintains a professional network of colleagues both within and beyond the ECU Health System.
    Acts as a consultant within the hospital, the ECU Health system, and the community to determine relevant educational services and programs.

    Consults with inter-professional health care team members in planning individual and population-based learning opportunities.

    Serves as on-site expert, resource, and consultant in areas of expertise.

    Serves as a resource and consultant for the assessment, development, and implementation of policies and procedures related to areas of expertise.

    Applies an understanding of current change and communication theories when interacting with all participants on the inter-professional health care team.

    Contributes to the professional development of diverse health care providers.

    Minimum Requirements
    • Licensed as a registered nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is required.
    • Minimum of five years clinical practice with evidence of advanced clinical knowledge, leadership, teaching, and advanced clinical reasoning ability.
    • Must be proficient with computers, information technology, and patient care technology.
    • Certification as American Heart Association BLS and ACLS Instructor is preferred.

    Preferred Requirements
    • Master's Degree in Nursing with a concentration in education, informatics, or health information and systems management is preferred.
