    Position Summary & Responsibilities:

    Position Summary:

    This position is the primary resource for the Transportation Planning Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Unit on efforts and projects related to digital delivery, integration, and data sharing with computer-aided design (CAD) systems, 3D modeling, LiDAR point clouds, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and digital as-builts (DAB). They are expected to remain current on emerging GIS, CAD, LiDAR, UAS and DAB technologies, conducting research and providing recommendations to the GIS Manager and the GIS Leadership Team, in which they are included.

    Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as a principal assistant to the GIS Section Manager by coordinating internal department operations and/or providing professional guidance and direction in the specialized areas of GIS, CAD, LiDAR, DABs and UAS data acquisition and management.
  • Serves as liaison between the GIS Section and both internal divisions/bureaus and external agencies on subjects or projects pertaining to CAD, LiDAR, UAS and DAB data, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervises activities of assigned planning and research functions, making decisions concerning the allocation of time, equipment, and staffing; establishes criteria and goals for data collection and analysis; supervises the collection, organization, format, preparation and archiving of UAS, aerial LiDAR and DAB data.
  • Directs the UAS program for KDOT and DAB implementation for the GIS Section by planning, coordinating, and supervising engineers, technicians, analysts, and UAS pilots.
  • Oversees and recommends UAS flights for data collection and obtains approvals and FAA waivers as may be necessary for execution of the program. Assists in UAS data collection and post-flight data processing for the agency.
  • Conducts independent research on the described data activities, analyzes data and available tools/technology, and produces reports identifying and recommending solutions for the GIS Section Manager and, as assigned, for the Bureau of Transportation Planning and for other KDOT Divisions.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • Professional Engineering License recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
  • UAS FAA 107 pilot license issued and recognized by FAA.
  • Non-Commercial Class C Kansas Driver's License.
  • 10 years civil engineering experience working for a state transportation department.
