JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE:
Director of Transportation
REPORTS TO:
Superintendent
QUALIFICATIONS:
Iowa School Bus Driver Permit
Good driving record and cleared Iowa MVR check
Cleared criminal, child and adult abuse background checks
Evidence of adequate health to fulfill performance responsibilities
Underground Storage Tank Operator Training
Working knowledge of bus repair and maintenance
Management, organizational and coordination skills
Ability to communicate information and ideas, both verbally and in writing
Able to prioritize, organize and accomplish assigned work
Able to supervise and direct school employees
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plan, organize and implement the certified and classified recruitment and hiring program
To enable each student, through safe and efficient transportation to take full advantage of the complete range of curricular, extracurricular, and co-curricular activities offered by school districts.
To study and become thoroughly knowledgeable of all state and federal laws.
To observe the total bus operation and make recommendations for any improvements needed in the district.
To ride and observe each bus route one time per year
To assist in the recruitment and selection for employment or dismissal of all transportation personnel and to make recommendations on transfers, promotions, and/or releases.
To inspect and assume the responsibility for the safe operation of school buses and other school vehicles assigned to the transportation department.
To be familiar with all state regulations for equipment and aid in the development of such local specifications as necessary.
To be prepared to make recommendations concerning possible school closings or early dismissals due to road conditions and other safety factors affecting transportation through consultation with superintendents as assigned.
To coordinate and complete all required bus drills.
To coordinate all substance abuse testing for bus drivers.
To respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive parent and citizen inquiries and complaints; confer with school administration and parents on disciplinary problems of student passengers.
To establish an efficient system for maintenance and repair.
To assign extra-curricular buses and drivers. To schedule the use of school-owned vehicles in cooperation with principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.
To monitor, check, and verify work time records of employees within the transportation department prior to submission to the School Business Manager.
To be able to recruit, maintain, and assign substitute drivers.
To attend appropriate committee and staff meetings.
To complete all reports as deemed appropriate for State and Local requirements either assigned or required by the Superintendent of Schools.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Carlisle Community School District's policy on evaluation.
