    Department Summary:

    It's an exciting time at Drake University for academic advising. Drake recently transitioned a new Blended Advising Model is a team-based advising approach developed to meet the evolving academic, personal, and professional needs of students, and positively impact first to second year retention and persistence to graduation.

    Additionally, to best serve our students, we are in the process of combining our offices of academic advising and career services.

    Under the direction of Strategic Director of Academic Advising and Career Services, Drake is re-envisioning how we advise and counsel students in both their academic and career goals.

    For this position, we are seeking a highly collaborative individual who will have a sincere and vested interest in serving Drake students.

    Job Summary:

    Drake University is seeking a highly motivated and detail orientated Advising Specialist or Assistant Director who values equitable and inclusive student support and collaborative approaches to working with colleagues on a campus wide level.

    This role will be an essential component of the Drake advising community as a key contributor to the successful transition of specific Drake University student populations and supporting new and continuing academic advising specialists.
    We hope to fill this position as quickly as reasonably possible.

    Minimum Qualifications:


    • Bachelor's Degree

    • At least 2 years of experience in academic advising and/or a closely aligned higher education content area (i.e., admissions, student support, orientation, first year or transfer experience, housing, financial aid)

    • Experience with, and enthusiasm for, providing equitable and inclusive student support services and collaborating with students, staff, faculty, and community constituencies

    Preferred Qualifications:


    • Master's Degree

    • 3+ years of experience within academic advising and/or admissions within higher education. Will consider graduate assistantship or graduate level internship(s) when calculating years of experience

    • Working knowledge of the principles, practices and strategic planning techniques of academic advising and the ability to apply such principles, practices and techniques to academic advising, retention, and student success initiatives

    • Knowledge of unique student populations such as transfer, student parents, veterans, pre-professional and ability to serve as Office of Advising liaison to internal and external constituencies, including area community colleges, on student processes and requirements

    • Experience developing and implementing specialized recruitment, retention, and academic success programming for target student populations (i.e., internal and external transfer students, veteran students, student parents, pre-professional etc.)

    • Capable of managing projects with competing priorities and deadlines

    • Strong organizational skills and an ability to deliver report/data based information and maintain accurate and detailed records

    • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written electronic communication skills sufficient to prepare, explain, and present messages and materials for diverse audiences and maintain positive relationships

    • Proficiency with MS Office Suite and experience with, or willingness to learn, software and database programs including Banner and Slate

    Job Duties:

    Academic Advising and Registration (50%):


    • In partnership with the Office of Admission, Office of the Registrar, and the appropriate college or school advising specialist (including Bright College), support transfer students' initial onboarding from admission to orientation.


    • Conduct academic advising or coaching appointments with incoming transfer students and other designated student populations by providing accurate and detailed information related to course equates, general education, and degree completion.


    • Serve as a technical resource to internal and external constituencies regarding new and continuing student facing policies and procedures.


    • In collaboration with the Office of the Registrar, appropriate colleges/schools, or external stakeholders update and maintain Drake Transfer Majors and Pathway Guide document.


    • Maintain accurate and detailed student records, using various technology systems (i.e., Banner, Starfish, Slate etc.).


    • Develop and maintain advising related literature (print, email, web) for distribution to prospective and continuing target student populations (i.e., newsletters, website maintenance etc.).

    Academic Advising Programming and Partnerships (40%):


    • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to provide initial and on-going academic, personal, and professional support for target student populations (i.e., internal and external transfer students, veteran students, student parents, pre-professional, first generation students, students on academic notice etc.).


    • Collaborate with the Office of New Student and Family Programs, Access & Success, and Career Services to develop and deliver programs, workshops, and services that meet the academic, personal, and professional needs of a changing study body.


    • Work with the Office of Admission to build collaborative, cooperative partnerships with area community colleges, as needed.


    • Partner with the Office of the Registrar and Office of Admission to make data-driven decisions regarding initial and ongoing student outreach and support.


    • Support the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Office of the Deputy Provost to facilitate the onboarding and training of new faculty mentors, as needed.


    • Serve on key committees, including Drake Advising Council that implicate target student population processes, requirements, policies, and transition.


    • Represent the advising at Admissions pre-matriculation events, on- and off-campus, as needed.

    Administration & Curriculum (10%):


    • Supervise newly hired advising specialists as apart of the blended advising model, as appropriate.


    • Assist the Director of Advising in the coordination of strategic reports and student outreach such as Not Yet Registered, Not Yet Advised, Leave of Absence etc.


    • On an annual and ongoing basis, assist the Director of Advising in strategic reviews of common academic advising tools such as, program sheets and 4-year sample plans.

    Other duties as assigned (5%).

    Salary & Benefits

    This position is a salaried position at a grade 13. The salary range is $47,500 – $53,000.
