    Firefighter/EMT Position at City of DeLand

    This is a skilled position responsible for preventing and extinguishing fires, maintaining firefighting equipment, and conducting support activities.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Operate pumps, ladders, and auxiliary equipment.
    • Perform ventilation, clean-up, and rescue operations.
    • Check and test hydrants, sprinkler systems, and portable extinguishers.
    • Conduct fire education, fire drills, and inspections to ensure compliance with fire prevention ordinances and standards.
    • Assist in maintenance of Department records and reports.
    • Perform general maintenance and tests on Fire Department property and equipment.
    • Perform operational checks on EMS equipment.
    • Make fire inspections and secure the abatement of fire hazards in commercial, industrial, residential, and other structures and properties.
    • Attend training courses related to fire prevention and protection.
    • Respond to fire and Medical Emergencies.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and identified in DeLand Fire Department Rules and Regulations 1000.

    Qualification Requirements:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

    Education and Experience Requirements:

    • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
    • Possession of a current State of Florida Firefighters Minimum Standards Certification is required.
    • Possession of a current Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certification is required.

    Licenses and Special Requirements:

    • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license and a vehicle operator license (Class D with an "E" endorsement) is required.
    • Ability to pass entrance level exam approved by Fire Department and required probationary exams.

    Language Skills:

    • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to speak and deal directly with the public in a professional and friendly manner.
    • Ability to communicate in times of emergencies.
    • Ability to develop and maintain good personal relationships with other employees and the public.

    Reasoning Ability:

    • Employee should be capable of following direction and performing assigned tasks without direct supervision.

    Other Skills and Abilities:

    • Working knowledge in communication skills, fire suppression, tactics and strategy, human relations, building construction codes and ordinances, fire prevention, community relations, hazardous materials, public finance, and safety practices.
    • Knowledge of streets, buildings, and hydrant locations in the City of DeLand.
    • Knowledge of ropes for fire hose, nozzles, appliances, and protective breathing apparatus.
    • Ability and knowledge in the technical use and care of ladders, communication equipment, and uses of varied fire streams.
    • Report writing and basic computer skills.

    Work Environment/ADA:

    Employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, from heights, on uneven surfaces, with radiant energy, in dusty conditions, and may handle solvents and chemicals. This position requires walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, equipment operation, depth perception, and lifting 45 pounds or more.
