    Closing Date: 5/16/2024 11:59 PM EasternPosition InformationNew Hanover County's Building Safety Permitting department is seeking a customer-oriented, computer-savvy Permitting Specialist who knows how to provide top-notch service and is delightful to customers during every interaction.

    If you are familiar with the permitting-related processes for building construction and trade work, a great communicator, and enjoy going above and beyond for customers, this job is for youThis position is responsible for receiving and processing building and trade permit applications from developers, contractors, and homeowners.

    It serves as a first point of contact for customers seeking information on the status of the various agency reviews of the work proposed in the permit application.

    The person in this position also responds to customers contacting the county in person, by phone, or by email.


    Duties include the following:

    assisting customers in the lobby; reviewing permit applications for their completeness and determining the scope of the plan review; guiding applicants through the permit process; setting up projects in the COAST software system; scheduling inspections; referring customers to the appropriate department's technical or subject matter expert for additional information; accepting payments; issuing building permits; and performing other duties of a similar nature.

    The Building Safety Permitting department has a team of dedicated staff who focus on effective county government and have strategic objectives of (1) continuous focus on the customer experience and (2) delivering quality service at the right time.

    Salary Information:
    The current hiring range for this position begins at $40,048. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations

    QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:


    High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and two years of experience related to customer service and construction permitting and inspections processes.

    Must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel and possess the ability to learn new software systems quickly.
    Must have excellent computer skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced customer-friendly office environment.

    What will make your application stand out:
    Understanding of permitting fee transactions. Experience conducting credit card transactions via phone. Understanding of the building process. Knowledge of permitting and inspection software programs, such as Tyler Technology's EnerGov CAOST Permitting Portal. Experience working with customers in person and by telephone.
