    Overview:

    With 18 departments and five centers spanning the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the largest of NIU's six undergraduate colleges. By the nature of our mission, we touch virtually every new student to the university, regardless of their major, through the wide array of general education courses housed within our departments.

    The Anatomy Coordinator in the Department of Biology is responsible for the overall management and coordination of the anatomy laboratory within the educational institution. This includes the virtual anatomy laboratory, which utilizes cutting-edge technologies, particularly virtual reality and Anatomage tables, overseeing virtual lab sessions, and for ensuring the proper handling of cadavers and overseeing lab sessions. The person will contribute to the mission of the Human Anatomical Sciences Master's program, coordinate with faculty, and maintain a safe, efficient, and state-of-the-art learning environment. Candidate have strong ethical principles in handling the deceased in a respectful and appropriate manner, and be comfortable working in close proximity with embalmed cadavers and with the dissection process.

    Position Summary:

    This person is expected to group and schedule work activities to achieve efficiency of operation
    while meeting any necessary deadlines.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Lab Support:
    • Perform weekly check-ins on teaching materials including cadavers & plastinated models). Assessing for facility issues such as mold, leaks, etc.
    • Order lab supplies as needed.
    • Maintain cleanliness of the laboratory space.
    • Maintain/organize models and lab equipment.
    • Coordinate the acquisition of anatomical materials, including organizing and coordinating donor transport and delivery and managing chain of custody documentation for anatomical specimens.
    • Maintain/train in using the virtual Anatomage tables (maintenance and software updates.
    • Responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, monitoring and cleaning of all laboratory equipment and supplies to ensure smooth operation of anatomy programs

    Instructional Support and Outreach:
    • Assist faculty in designing and implementing virtual and other anatomy curriculum, utilizing advanced technologies for immersive learning experiences.
    • Teach core courses in the Human Anatomical Sciences ( HAS ) program including BIOS 311, BIOS 355.
    • Proctor exams, assist in set-up of practical exams, coordinate work of teaching assistants, assist course director with remediation exams.
    • Provide technical support during lab sessions, guiding students through anatomical studies or assisting students with anatomical examinations.
    • Collaborate with faculty, instructors, graduate students, administrators, and other relevant departments to ensure smooth operation of the anatomy program.
    • Participate in meetings and committees related to anatomy education and spaces.
    • Participate in outreach and facilitate lab visits.

    Student Support and Service:
    • Provide guidance and support to students in their anatomical studies, including answering questions, offering resources, technical support for navigating virtual anatomy tools and troubleshooting issues.
    • Provide service to the Human Anatomical Sciences ( HAS ) including supervising anatomy lab-based student research projects, capstone projects, participating on HAS Master's student committees.

    Inventory Control :
    • Manage inventory of anatomical specimens, tools, laboratory supplies virtual reality equipment, software licenses and related technology.
    • Maintain accurate records of lab activities and inventory.

    Safety and Compliance:
    • Enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding the handling of human remains.
    • Monitor and maintain safety equipment and emergency response procedures.
