Viterbo University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music (Choral Conducting) within the Conservatory for the Performing Arts.

This faculty position offers an exceptional opportunity to provide artistic, instructional, and programmatic leadership for a dynamic and growing choral area while contributing to the long-term strategic development of the University's music program.

The successful candidate will conduct collegiate and community-engaged ensembles, teach undergraduate coursework aligned with their expertise, and maintain an active record of scholarly or creative achievement.

Grounded in the University's Catholic, Franciscan liberal arts mission, the role calls for a collaborative educator–artist committed to excellence in teaching, inclusive ensemble leadership, and meaningful service to students, the institution, and the broader community.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Teaching

Conduct choral ensembles, including Concert Choir, 9th Street Singers, and Viterbo Choral Arts (a large ensemble of approximately 60–70 singers, including students and community members).

Teach additional undergraduate music courses (e.g., theory, conducting, musicianship) as assigned based on expertise and program needs.
Provide academic advising and mentorship to undergraduate music students.
Demonstrate teaching effectiveness consistent with Faculty Handbook standards, including assessment, peer review, and student feedback.

Program Leadership

Provide artistic and academic leadership for the choral area, contributing to enrollment growth, curricular alignment, and program sustainability.
Collaborate with Conservatory leadership and faculty on concert programming, recruitment, and long-term choral strategy.
Support recruitment and retention efforts through ensemble leadership, outreach, auditions, and prospective student engagement.

Scholarly / Creative Activity

Maintain an ongoing record of scholarly, creative, or professional activity appropriate to choral conducting and music education.
Demonstrate professional growth and contribution consistent with expectations for tenure and promotion.

Service

Participate in departmental, Conservatory, and University service, including committees and shared governance.
Contribute to assessment, curriculum development, accreditation, student advising, and strategic initiatives as assigned.
Engage in service that supports the mission of the University and strengthens community relationships through choral music.

Required Qualifications

Earned doctorate (DMA, PhD, or equivalent) in Choral Conducting, Music Education, or a closely related field by time of appointment.

Demonstrated success conducting collegiate-level choral ensembles.
Demonstrated effectiveness teaching aural skills and undergraduate musicianship.
Evidence of capacity for sustained scholarly, creative, or professional activity.
Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, repertoire, and ensemble leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with community-based choral ensembles.
Experience programming diverse and contemporary choral repertoire.
Experience contributing to program rebuilding, growth, or long-term planning.

Reporting and Evaluation

Reports to the Executive Artistic Director of the Conservatory for the Performing Arts, in coordination with Music Program leadership.

Evaluated annually and for tenure and promotion in accordance with the Viterbo University Faculty Handbook, with review across teaching, scholarly/creative activity, and service.
