TITLE: Secondary Guidance Counselor

**About the Position**
**Are you passionate about guiding students to success?** Join our team at Schuyler Colfax Middle School as a Secondary Guidance Counselor.

**I. QUALIFICATIONS:**

Hold a valid New Jersey Educational Services Certificate as Counselor in Guidance or Student Personnel Services.
Experience with a secondary student population.
Preferably possess adequate training in bullying and violence prevention, individual and group counseling, and substance/alcohol abuse prevention.
NCAA clearinghouse knowledge is a bonus.

**II. POSITION SUMMARY:**
The Secondary Guidance Counselor is the go-to for guidance services at the school. Working closely with students, parents, and staff, you'll help students define their educational and life plans for personal fulfillment and responsible citizenship.

**III. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:**

**ACADEMIC**

Assist students in reaching their full potential.
Provide support and strategies for under-achieving, absent, or struggling students.
Maintain a log of counseling activities.
Interpret school policies and programs to students, parents, and the community.
Act as a resource for conflict resolution and decision-making.
Identify students in need of intervention.
Coordinate with crisis management and 504 committee teams.
Conduct conferences with staff and parents.
Infuse prevention programs into the educational program.
Assist with test administration and department programs.

**CAREER**

Provide resources for transitioning to high school and post-secondary options.
Assist with college applications and postsecondary transitions.
Help students align courses with postsecondary goals.
Offer career and college information consistent with standards.

**PERSONAL/SOCIAL**

Assist students with personal, social, and educational problems.
Intervene to improve student relationships and self-concept.
Conduct individual and group counseling.
Develop students' communication and coping skills.
Help with harassment and bullying interventions.
Provide referrals to outside agencies as needed.
Refer students with clinical needs to appropriate providers.
