    IT Network Technician


    GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Under general supervision of the Information Technology Director, the purpose of the position is to provide deployment, configuration, maintenance and monitoring of network traffic, switches, routers, firewalls, etc.

    Specific duties include network address assignment, assignment of routing protocols and routing tables, configuration of authentication and authorization, directory services, and determining specifications of hardware and software equipment for users.

    Position also involves providing complex technical hardware operations, software applications, network, internet systems and design specifications for hardware and software support to City employees, promoting efficient and organized operation of departmental activities.

    Employees in this classification function at supervision level, and are responsible for receiving, investigating, resolving, and documenting technical problems and requests.

    Position is responsible for administration, security and maintenance of all information technology systems, equipment and applications.


    Knowledge of structured programming languages:
    Visual Studio, SQL and Java

    Designs, installs, configures, maintains, and repairs computer/server hardware and software; responds to software, hardware and network connectivity requests to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of each department.

    Plans, manages and tracks computer, hardware, network and software assets to ensure fiscal responsibility and prudent expenditures.
    Ensures the stable operation of LAN and WAN. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting and optimizing all network configurations.
    Develops, implements and maintains policies, procedures and associated training plans for network resource administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery.

    Performs network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and updated documentation and technical specifications information to network steady state.

    Performs server and security audits, system backups and recovery, including disaster recovery planning and testing.
    Monitors and tests network performance and provides network performance analysis, statistics and reports.

    Installs a n d maintains the City wired and wireless computer network and related systems, internet connections, VPN connections, telecommunications devices and related equipment.

    Establishes and maintains virus protection software for each use within the City; ensures all current software updates, hot-fixes and patches are maintained.

    Manages security solutions, including backup, firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems.
    Maintains open communication with all departmental management and employees for the dissemination of information regarding software and hardware issues.

    Oversee installation, configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting of end user workstation hardware, software and peripheral devices; ensures proper network connectivity of all workstations.

    Manage all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, hubs and UPSs.

    Consults with software vendors and company support desks for product research, dissemination of information and problem resolution with existing software.

    Responsible for System Administration and network management platform tools, equipment, hardware and software upgrades.
    Maintains problem documentations and their resolution procedures.
    Knowledge of SQL Server an Visual Studio
    Experience with SQL Server and Microsoft Server operating systems is a plus.
    Acts as backup for Information Technology Manger.
    Performs related duties as assigned.


    MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE


    Associate's or Bachelor's Degree with coursework in Computer Science or a related field preferred; supplemented by two (2) to three (3) years of progressive professional experience in Information Technology administration support functions; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    Must possess and maintain a valid driver license.
    Ability to plan, coordinate, direct, and motivate the work of professional and administrative staff.

    Detailed working knowledge of computers and IT systems; ability to communicate complicated information to users who may not have a technology background.

    Extensive application support experience with SQL Server, Exchange Server 2008 and newer, backup, recovery and disaster recovery, MS Office, MS Operation Manager, and VPN.

    Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards including TCP/IP and routing.
    Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    Interacts and works well with others in a productive manner and gains the cooperation and respect of co-workers.
    Excellent customer service skills.
    Highly organized with the ability to multitask.
    Excellent work history and attendance record.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS The following is intended to provide a general sense of the work environment and physical demands that may be required of the position:

    Sit at a desk and use hand, wrist, and finger movements to operate a computer regularly.
    Talk and listen to other individuals in meetings and over the phone.
    Stand and walk around the office and to other City facilities in order to perform day-to-day duties.
    Lift and carry general office supplies and equipment, as well as computer and network equipment, tools and supplies.
