    Job Description / Essential Elements:

    MADERA COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS CLASS TITLE:

    SCHOOL NURSE BASIC FUNCTION:
    Under the direction of Assistant Superintendent, Student Programs and Services, the School Nurse will perform mandated services for children, serve as a consultant to school personnel, parents, and community medical and social agencies, assess students' health and developmental background, and serve on the committees which are assessing the students' educational plan


    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of pupils to identify specific physical disorders and other factors relating to the learning process, communicate with the primary care provider, and contribute significant information in order to enhance the pupils' educational plans.

    This includes, but is not limited to, vision and hearing screening of Kindergarten, 2, 5, 8, 10 or 11 grade students and scoliosis screening of 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys.

    Interpret the health and developmental assessment to parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals directly concerned with the pupil.

    Design and implement a health maintenance plan to meet the individual health needs of the students, incorporating plans directed by a physician.

    Refer the pupil and his or her parent or guardian to appropriate community resources for necessary services.

    Maintain communication with parents and all involved community practitioners and agencies to promote needed treatment and secure reports of findings pertinent to educational planning.

    Interpret medical and nursing findings appropriate to the student's individual educational plan and make recommendations to professional personnel directly involved.

    Consult with and serve as a resource person to teachers and administrators in health instruction curriculum for students by providing current scientific information regarding nutrition, preventive dentistry, prevention of communicable diseases, and other areas of health.

    Counsel pupils and parents by assisting children and youth, parents, and school personnel in identifying and utilizing appropriate and mutually acceptable private and community health delivery services for professional care and remediation of defects.

    Counsel with parents, pupils, and school staff regarding health-related attendance problems. Help parents, school personnel, and pupils understand and adjust to physical, mental, and social limitations. Counsel pupils and parents by exploring with families and pupils, attitudes, information, and values which affect their health behavior. Maintain professional competence through participation in professional organizations related to school health. Enter appropriate information in student cumulative folder.

    Prepare and submit reports as required by the Madera County Superintendent of Schools office and/or the California State Departments of Education or Health.

    May conduct immunization programs in schools and assure that every pupil's immunization is in compliance with the law. Participate in the evaluation and planning process of students in special education. Assist parents and pupils to solve financial, transportation, and other barriers to needed health services.

    KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

    KNOWLEDGE OF:
    Current medical protocols and communicable disease policies. Laws related to reporting and detecting suspected child abuse. Community resources, medical providers, clinics, and financial aid. Current first aid procedures. Laws and mandates related to school health.


    ABILITY TO:
    Consult with parents, teachers, and administration in conducting meetings. Work cooperatively with staff, districts, agencies, and general public in achieving common goals. Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels and contribute to a positive work environment. Communicate effectively with parents, staff, district personnel, members of the public, and representatives of other agencies.

    Evaluate and analyze complex problems, issues, and concerns and render judgment, make timely and effective decisions, and solve problems efficiently.

    Communicate clearly and concisely in both verbal and written mode. Prepare clear and concise written correspondence and policies. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Operate a computer and assigned office equipment. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Meet schedules and time lines. Work independently with little direction. Utilize the paraprofessional and delegate wisely. Use proper interviewing techniques. Plan and organize work.


    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Any combination equivalent to:

    Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited institution and at least two years experience as a Registered Nurse in a medical setting or in school-site nursing.

    Experience with children with special needs desired.


    LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    State License as a Registered Nurse. Preliminary or Professional Clear School Nurse Services Credential.

    Standard Designated Services Credential with specialization in Health or Health and Development Credential or Health Services:
    School Nurse Credential. Audiometric Testing Credential. Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Incumbents must be insurable by the liability carrier for the County Office of Education.


    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    ENVIRONMENT:
    Classroom environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to assist students.

    Requirements / QualificationsAny combination equivalent to:
