    About the Unit


    The Electrical Trades II - Traffic Signal Electrician works on the Traffic Signals Electrical Crew of the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 3.

    The unit performs a combination of electronic/electrical work in the installation, calibration, operation, repair, maintenance and updating of traffic signals and control devices, highway lighting, ramp meters, warning beacons, interconnect communications devices within the Region in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Manual Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), local city, county, state and federal regulations and the National Electrical Code (NEC).

    The unit Installs, maintains, inspects, and repairs electrical elements within CDOT buildings, facilities, and structures in the Region in accordance with all local city, county, state and federal regulations and the National Electrical Code (NEC).

    This work unit responds to emergencies involving signalized intersections, roadway lighting, and Interchanges, provides customer service, responds to citizen concerns, and ensures safe operation of all vital equipment.

    About the Position


    The Electrical Trades II, Traffic Signal Electrician is a fully operational electrician that works with, and under the direction of the Electrical Trade III.

    This position performs the necessary duties and tasks to ensure the Region traffic signal equipment and other electrical/electronic equipment is functioning properly at all times.

    The position performs electrical duties on power-source equipment for devices that the unit is responsible for maintaining and operating.

    The Electrical Trades II position is responsible for working on equipment over 50 volts, which other CDOT positions are unable to maintain or repair.


    When assigned as lead worker, the position will schedule, coordinate, delegate, and supervise the work crew to perform the assigned work, ensuring quality, quantity, and timeliness for the completion of the job while maintaining a safe work environment.

    This position is responsible for directing the Electrical Trades I on assigned projects. This position trains and mentors employees so they can attain their Electrical Journeyman's License.

    Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:


    • Performs Journeyman Electrician level tasks and layout related to new construction, re-construction, repair and scheduled maintenance of traffic control equipment. This includes setting poles, mast arms, installing overhead span wire, underground conduit, pull boxes, installation and termination of associated electrical and control wiring, etc.
    • Performs Journeyman Electrician level tasks and layout related to installation and maintenance of electrical wiring, circuits, and equipment, including electrical power and service for traffic signals, ramp metering, traffic control devices, and arterial ITS devices.
    • Performs installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of electrical infrastructure, such as electrical distribution services, light, heat, equipment and power distribution systems in CDOT owned buildings and other structures within the Region.
    • Adds circuits and devices when necessary, in accordance with the NEC.
    • Installs and maintains lighting systems in tunnels, snow sheds and on the roadway.
    • Installs and maintains ITS including radar signs, VMS and black out signs, and ITS cameras.
    • Performs electrical calculations such as voltage drop, conduit fill, conductor sizing and deration using the NEC and applicable NFPA documents.
    • Installs, calibrates, and tests new traffic control equipment and systems; initiates new control box set up and five-day operational tests.
    • Calibrates, tests, repairs, and maintains traffic signal equipment in a safe and proper operating condition using various types of testing equipment such as volt-ohm meter, megger, oscilloscope, locator, d/c power supply and time domain reflectometer as well as preventive procedures and computer software.
    • Verifies controller program data with laptop and uses computer software to configure, verify, or update devices or systems.
    • Performs annual preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on traffic signal control cabinets by annual deadline.
    • Provides insight and assistance to engineers, contractors, and outside agencies regarding current and existing traffic signal locations, operations, and design.
    • Updates electrical as-built plans as applicable.
    • Inspects electrical and signal installation for proper installation in accordance with the NEC and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code books, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), M&S standards and specifications for proper and efficient installations.
    • Helps train other Electrical Trades positions in the unit by providing oversight and instruction as assigned.
    • As assigned, performs lead work in electrical installations, maintenance, and inspection of electrical and traffic control devices, through knowledge of the NEC, NFPA, MUTCD, M&S standards and Specifications.
    • Responds to reported emergency service calls involving traffic control equipment, roadway lighting, pump stations, facilities, buildings, and structures. This includes, but is not limited to, control box and/or pole knock downs, trouble shooting and resolving timing complaints, malfunctions and detection problems.
    • Reports in a timely manner to observe, troubleshoot, assess the reported problems, affect repairs, and request back up when needed in order to keep motoring public safe.
    • Operates aerial device, backhoe, loader, trencher, concrete saw, other specialized equipment, hand, and power tools.
    • Prepares, verifies, and routes electronic and written documents as necessary using computer.
    • Processes ordering, shipping, receiving and returning of materials, electronic equipment and materials by assigned deadlines.
    • Performs Journeyman Electrician level work in the installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and inspection of communication systems, including but not limited to systems and equipment for: Intelligent Transportation Systems, video monitoring and detection, fiber optics, dial up, hardwire, and wireless systems.
    • Performs tasks related to the identifying, locating, and marking of underground utilities operated and maintained by CDOT.
    • Operates utility locating equipment and works around and near live electric, gas, water, and other utility lines.
    • Responds to emergency locate requests.
    • Operates, cleans, and performs preventive maintenance on equipment such as aerial device, trucks, backhoe, loader, trencher, concrete saw, power tools, hand tools, test equipment, boring tools, potholers, air compressors, generators, trailers, and other specialized equipment per manufacturer's and CDOT's standards.
    • Completes pre and post trips on assigned equipment and completes all associated documentation.
    • Installs, calibrates and repairs electrical/electronic apparatus that are 50 volts or higher, such as: generator power plants, UPS equipment, motor control equipment, variable frequency drives, printed circuit boards, solid state devices, instruments, pumps, programmable controllers, welders, and electric cranes.
    • Identifies what resources, people, equipment, materials, and other parts are needed to complete a job.
    • Obtains costs and orders material for traffic signal parts, electrical equipment parts, and building electrical material.
    • Plans, schedules, lays out, and sets up work zones for safety, and to assure all safety equipment is used for the safety of the individual, other workers and the traveling public.
    • Other job duties as assigned.

    Work Environment:

    • Typical work schedule is 4-10 hour days, Monday - Thursday.
    • On average 20 % of the work hours are spent in an office setting and 80 % in the field.
    • Must be available to respond to emergencies outside of regular work hours.
    • Required to work on a rotating twenty-four hour on call emergency service.
    • Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 10-80 feet.
    • Frequent travel during workday to provide installations and repairs as well as for training and meetings.
    • Occasional in-state/overnight travel, approximately 4 times per year for meetings and trainings.
    • Required to drive CDOT vehicles.
    • Work around live electric, gas, water and other utility lines.
    • Exposure to loud noises.
    • Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin.
    • Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600 V) and electrical shock.
    • Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold.
    • Required to use computers and other electronic devices to accomplish everyday work duties
    • Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 11,000 feet altitude
    • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
    Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

    Minimum Qualifications


    • Must have a current, valid licensure as a journeyman electrician from the Colorado Electrical Board.
    • A current, valid Master Electrician license from the Colorado Electrical Board will substitute for the Journeyman Electrician license.
    Conditions of Employment


    • Must obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class A with no restrictions on airbrakes within 9 months of hire.
    • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks. More information in the supplemental information section.
    • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.
    • On-call work (rotating basis as well as subject to call)
    • Shift work
    • Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
    • May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to assigned workstation.
    • New employees are required to take two weeks of maintenance training, while veteran CDOT employees are required to take one week of training each year. This training is completed via computer or in our Aurora location.
    • Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.
    • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency.
    Preferred Qualifications

    The exceptional applicant will be an experienced Electrician with proven ability or accomplishment in the following:


    • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
    • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
    • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
    • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of the National Electrical Code;
    • Experience utilizing and applying information from the National Electric Code, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) construction standards, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 and CDOT's Standards and Specifications book;
    • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment;
    • Traffic signal experience and experience in electrical control circuit maintenance;
    • Understanding of and experience with Intelligent Transportation Systems, video monitoring and detection, fiber optics, dial up, hardwire, and wireless systems;
    • Proven leadership and/or mentoring skills;
    • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;
    • Strong planning, time, project management, scheduling and organizational skills;
    • Adaptability;
    • Strong oral and written communication skills;
    • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;
