SUMMARY:

The Masters School Department of Modern & Classical Languages seeks a French teacher who is flexible and collaborative in planning, teaching, and assessing, and helps students take an active role in and responsibility for their own learning. Modern language faculty are committed to the student-centered Communicative Language approach in an immersion classroom environment, and work to help students cultivate intercultural competence as part of their path toward global citizenship.

Primary responsibilities are to teach a range of levels of French as needed in a given year. We seek candidates with strengths in curricular design and current pedagogical theory, and a particular orientation toward student-centered learning. The ability to teach courses in a second language, Spanish in particular, is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Teach various levels of French, from level I through AP. Full-time teachers teach four sections in total.
• Fulfill one non-teaching responsibility (NTR), such as coaching or advising a student club/publication.
• Successfully engage and develop students' interest in French and in francophone cultures across the world.
• Attend departmental and divisional meetings, as well as all-school professional development events. We offer a yearlong program of activities for teachers new to The Masters School.
• Participate in the life of the Upper School by attending full group activities (morning meetings, student presentations/performances, and culminating events) and by participating in non-teaching responsibilities, such as study hall, advising a club or coaching.
• Serve as an advisor to a group of students. REQUIREMENTS:
  • Understanding of and desire to work with upper school students
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competency
  • Energy, enthusiasm and curiosity – willingness to be a fellow learner with students
  • Particular orientation toward student-centered learning
  • Proven ability to communicate with students, parents and colleagues to build community and support student learning, including excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and to work independently
  • Interest in and aptitude for building new learning experiences
  • Awareness of current pedagogical theory
  • Three years French teaching and advising experience, preferably working in an independent day/boarding, college preparatory, or similar school environment
  • Interest in being an active member of The Masters School community, such as enhancing student life, leading a student club, or coaching a team
  • Bachelor's degree in French language/literature or Romance languages; advanced degree preferred HOW TO APPLY :
